However, i don't really know what i'd rate myself. I think there's still so much more to learn about it but i do think i understand the culture decently at the same time.

So maybe a 5. I'm part of the way to being a head who knows his shit but i really don't like to pretend to speak with authority.

You just quoted me, poorly and without grammatical correction and tried to pass it off as your own thoughts. You didn't even change a single word and your post doesn't even say what you'd rate yourself.

i think theres always something new to learn but as far as history i would say im bout a 3 or 4 cause i know peeps who know words to songs like a prayer and know what album came out in what year and who produced what etc...

i also think that you cant know hip hop fully unless you expierience and explore all its elements for your self.

If you knew that much shouldn't you be quite knowledgeable about b-boying as well? It all goes hand in hand really... I have never sprayed but I do know a lot about how graffiti came about.

I really don't think people are honestly gauging their knowledge here. They're probably just giving themselves a high number just to make themselves feel more "knowledgeable" about hip-hop than they really are.

Modestly speaking, I can say I know tons about hip-hop culture and more specifically each of its elements. But you're always learning something new, there's always more to learn, and you can't possibly learn everything about Hip-Hop in even a full lifetime. To even get a decent understanding you have to ACTUALLY live and experience the culture and spread it. Not just say you know a lot because you happen to be b-boy or something.

Knowing something is one thing, being it is a whole other story.

Not once did I say "You're wrong." I said people seem to give them selves more credit than is due.

You're right. I don't know you, I haven't seen that instance. But that doesn't mean I'm naive. I know damn well most people make it seem like they know more than they let on, EVERYONE does it, including me, else would we be human? We're all egocentric whether you like to think so or not--other people are just more extreme cases than others. You honestly and truly believe you know as much as you "rated" your self to know? I KNOW I know a lot about Hip-Hop, but I also know how much I DON'T know.

Don't try to throw that "you don't know me so you can't judge me" kinda ish, because with this topic you don't generally have to know the person who "rates" them self a generally high number to know that they have to be bluffing to a certain extent.
