Need help with windmill UPDATE: 21-02-08 NOW WITH VID - 02-20-2008, 07:13 PM

Ok so im startin to learn the windmill but im stuck at one point now i understand all the motion but i cant seem to initiate the first kick/swing i can collapse but then i just cant kick so what happens is that i collapse n move on the side to try to kick but end up falling on my hips so..yea ill try to send a vid of my problem but it will surely be the ugliest thing youll ever c but yea help is much appreciated

EDIT: Yea this is my problem tho i dont understand the answer:

You're getting close to getting them, but not quite. Several likely scenarios:

1. When you come to your stab, your legs droop and your feet touch the ground. You don't SLAM, but you can't keep them from dragging.
2. You can get to your stab and all just fine, but you get stuck there -- you can't seem to collapse again, or keep going for that matter. (This is noted by Mothergoose as the flailing legs syndrome)
3. You fall off your stab as you go for your second round (related to above problem), thus causing you to go on your back, not your shoulders, and/or your leg(s)/ass to hit the ground.
4. You can cleanly get onto your stab and collapse cleanly again .. but you look like a dumbass because it's in a one-two motion and you pause and lose all your momentum when on your stab, causing you to have to "start" again (it's as if you're doing individual mills over and over, rather than "linked" ones)

And, their solutions:

1. You still aren't moving your legs in a circular fashion. Most likely, the problem is that you're going up and down -- as in, when you face up, you "bounce" directly up, then you turn over, and guess what? You come directly down. It's ok to bounce up a little, but don't jump up ten friggin thousand feet (especially for stabbed mills). Also, you could be waiting too long to stab (see below)
2. You're mentally waiting for the stab -- as in, your'e thinking as you're turning over "ok, here comes the stab, here comes the stab..." and it doesn't even cross your mind what to do next until AFTER you feel that elbow drop in your gut -- but by then, it's too late. This is closely tied in with stabbing late; you want to have your stab down as soon as you're 3/4 of the way done turning to your frontside. Make sure your fingers are pointing UP.
3. You're stabbing wrong or late (see above two problems), you don't have the collapse down, or you're trying to go too fast. When you stab, don't stab at a 90 degree angle to the ground -- have your arm at a little LESS than a 45 degree angle, and push forward and try to roll onto your shoulder as soon as your hand touches the ground. REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR LEGS UP AND CONTINUE ROTATING THEM ON THEIR AXIS. All this should happen AT THE SAME TIME, not step by step. Like I said, windmills should FLOW -- not be "omg i have to do this then this then this"
4. You should actively swing twice during the mill - once when facing down going to facing up, and once when facing up and going to facing down. Most likely, you're only swinging once. Since you have the motion down, you really aren't far - just make sure you have the stab and collapse smoothly, and focus on swinging more, keeping on your upper back/shoulders, and going faster.
And my problem is 2. You can get to your stab and all just fine, but you get stuck there -- you can't seem to collapse again, or keep going for that matter. (This is noted by Mothergoose as the flailing legs syndrome) but i dont understand the answer

P.S oh and im learnin so no rotations yet not even one

Those are the worst attempts I've seen of mills for a while.
First of all, you need to work on your starting position and collapse.
Do a handglide. Keep your legs spread. Lean forwards, try putting your head on the ground. Raise only your left leg and keep your right leg on the ground.

In order to collapse you need to bend from the elbow. You just fall off of your handglide and land on your side. You want to roll onto your back from that bent elbow. While you're doing this, swing your left leg across and lift up your right.

Also, don't be scared of swinging your legs in the air. If you keep your feet on the ground, you'll be going nowhere at all in your mills.

Come back when you've got these necessary elements and then post another video.

right now you are only putting your arm in the stabbing position and moving it and rolling on the ground....... look in the forums for turtle freeze....once you can do this with only your hands on the ground(feet off the ground and spread apart and you dont have to lock them just off the groung and spread) you are then ready to attempt the collapse.. if you already mastered the turtle freeze then post a vid of it.. also check out windmill tutorials on youtube...once you have the collapse you then you work on re-stabbing....gl

Watch Banshee's Collapse tutorial (stickied).

I think the most helpful thing I got from it was looking at where his legs were when he started collapsing and then matching that. It REALLY helps, or it helped me at least.

Good luck!

Your new windmills are way better than before. I thought you were hopeless for a bit haha.

Here's some new stuff for you to work on:

Alright, so you are now collapsing but you collapse too hard and you are landing on the side of your back. First the collapse: You want to lower yourself slowly to the ground by bending that elbow, then turn toward the side while you're doing it. Try to land on the side of your arm and ROLLING to the top of your back.

Lean forward while collapsing, then lean backwards when you are on your back. You have to have your weight concentrated toward the head area. If you concentrate it anywhere else, you're going to fall on your sides or on your hip.

Experiment around with the direction of your swinging leg. You want your leg directed towards the side then upwards. You'll start to get the general idea if you keep practicing. You want to at least be able to get cleanly on your back.

Good luck, come back with any more questions.
