More ways to increase spread? - 10-02-2006, 10:17 PM

Well I been doing splits like everyday holding a minute and I'm about maybe a foot from the ground? maybe more or less?
My problem is it doesn't seem to help with my spread for windmills, are there any other stretches that would help increase my spread?

Understanding the dynamics of the technique you use.

What causes speed? Correctly timed acclerations and deaccelerations of the twisting the hips, bending legs, and bending of the feet.

Do this: Sit in a chair that can spin. Try to spin around as fast as you can. When you are spinning in the chair, experiment with the positioning of your body and your limbs. Know what slows you down, and what speeds you up. This will help you better understand how to go faster when performing the windmill.

Yes flexibability helps, but it only helps so much. The rest is up to you...

Whip your legs harder and continue kicking. Never stop kicking even a second or you will lose alot of speed but if you're still doing stab mills, I suggest you forget it

um actually i can do infinite stabed mills if i had the room and don't get dizzy, and I can do forearms although im a bit rusty on those since I don't mill much, so I'm not really looking for tips on swinging and stuff. I just want to be able to spread farther to make my mills look nicer.

Sorta loosen your muscles when you stretch, dont tense them up. A foot from the ground is far away. another thing, no matter how far you stretch, your spread is going to be slightly smaller while milling than normal because you are fighting against laziness to keep them spread. keep practicin.

i think some people may have misread "spread" for "speed". just because you can almost get splits doesnt mean you can split your legs that far while milling. remember, while youre stretching your weight is doing all the work. when youre milling, you have to physically hold your legs apart, which requires strength in your hip flexors. you need to strengthen the muscles on the outside of your hips that enable you to pull your legs apart. sit straddles on the floor, and put your hands on the ground in front of you. then left your legs and make small circles with them. make sure they stay off the ground and stay straight. this will develop the strength. also, remember that the act of milling actually sort of pulls your legs together, so make sure to work on that.
a lot of it is also just forcing it while you mill

well, to get the muscles to be able to stretch your legs to the max.. Havent you seen the ballet movies? where they hold a rail and raise their leg to the sides? : D
