Help me with my cobra? (vid included) -
12-01-2004, 05:32 AM
hello once again.
yeah, i can officially get up on my 2 feet again,
just that i can't do much with them. i can't run or jump.
so for these past few days i've been trying out what i think is a cobra.
anyone of you out there... anyone at all... help me with it please?
this is what it looks like now.
tell me where i'm wrong... or what i'm doing wrong...
or just tell me what's the proper way to do it.
haha...
Khap? M0wicz? SpaceCap? Danis? Rice? Rap Attack?
*pulls hair*
well, i showed it to a friend and she said it does look like a cobra, but then when i filmed myself down and took a look... it just doesnt look like it at all. she told me that it's lookin rather alright, i just have to keep at it. but i just feel that there's something i'm not doing right. maybe i'm not even doing a cobra at all.
any help would be good help. heh.
go on, watch the clip.
and thanks in advance!

I would like to help but I don't snake or cobra.
But I would agree with you on that it doesn't look like you're cobra-ing. Cobra or snaking is basically doing many waves at once. Both arms and chest should be moving simultaneously...at least that's what I gather. When I try to do something remotely close to snaking...I wave out both arms (my chest is "caved in" if you will at the same time). Then I wave my chest out like a body wave but no body. Then I repeat in different directions.
Wish I had a camera. Then again I don't snake or cobra.
Move your arms as if you were waving regularly...but multi-task I suppose and wave your whole upper body. Try not to move your lower body because it won't help that you can't get the basic move down.
Hope I helped.
Peace.

mm.. i snake/cobra a bit.
I'd say:
mm.. that shirt is way too cool XD.
a bit offtopic, but:
arms: they should be moving simotaniously having waves go into towards the torso of your body. You in a way start a wave with the arm but pull them down and at your side? As poppin' taco does (eh.. i havent seen anyone else corba style BUT him) he leaves his arms in front of him as if doing a body wave, however continuously waving them into the torso.
Torso: I say its decent enough, however your shoulder rolling could be a bit of work on. Idk what direction youre doing the cobra's from, but for me, if i was going into the right sort've movement, the left shoulder should be pulling back as the right shoulder is rolling in, the left shoulder should be rolling in a counter clockwise movement, while the right shoulder goes clockwise? ehh.. bad with explainations. the whole "exposure of the chest" was alright, so its really the shoulders. *ah, also, when you sorta cup your front in like making your front hollow, try to extentuate it by slouching a bit and having the shoulders sorta bent forward*
Hips: I didnt really see much from leg down, so I would have to say taht the hip should look almost as if its apart and different from the torso. The hips should stick out like your about to take a dump standing up, yet youre not really bending your legs, just sticking your butt out like your mooning someone perhaps? your torso + head should be slanted a bit forward from your hips, then later behind the hips when moving the torso's direction from side to side.
Head: ah.. this is hardest to me, but whats really queer about this is that your head should also be moving at the direction of your cobra-ing *beforehand*, or its sorta like the startingline and/or the transition into the torso part. I can't really explain the head, but maybe its something like your going to move your head to the side of your body like a snake eying down its prey? ah.. on the animal channel, sometimes a snake moves his head side to side like almost ready to bite, you should be able to use that kinda movement and go from there for the head.
Last thing *i htink i went over this*:
Seperate hips-legs down from torso
 Hope that helped.. eh..

for one thing, my cobra/snakin' aint too smooth either so i cant help you out to the fullest, sorry.
but i checked ur vid and compared it to taco's, atushi(japanese popper) and yazuru (i believe thats how its spelled, another japanese popper)..
try not moving ur knees. or do a circle glide.
u sort of almost got the arm movements right, but from my cobra-ness (hehe) i lean my body at every direction, and i pop my chest to the direction, in a circle (i start from the front, then right, then back, then left) this should add a more and better illusion to the cobra, i'll try posting a vid of myself.

Guitarnbass: whoaaa you know alot dont you! alright... i'ma try what you said. but my shoulders were moving in opposite directions... my left shoulder was going counter-clockwise while my right shoulder was going clockwise.
Rice, thanks for the tip on the legs. hmm, maybe gliding. leaning and pop your chest... hmm i should try that.
and Guitarnbass, i dont know much about the head, haha!
i met this korean dancer online named Sang-un, he said he's from Winners Crew... took the opportunity to ask him for his take on the cobra.
he explaned it to me in such a way that...
the chest and hips both turn in the same direction, eg, clockwise, but they are turning separate from each other. like for example...
chest = front, hips = back
chest = right, hips = left
chest = back, hips = front
chest = left, hips = right
he then said the head should be rotating in the opposite direction of your chest, eg, if your chest is going clockwise, then your head should be counter-clockwise...
chest = front, head = back
chest = right, head = right
chest = back, head = front
chest = left, head = left
then i watched the "Kei - Cobra + Waves" video that was on popping.org awhile back, and i realised that he bends his knees during the turning of the hips. so i tried doing that... trying to mimic what kei was doing, including the way he moves his arms, with the basis of what Sang-un told me.
and then i look like crap.
hahaha. i think i'm just doing it wrong.
but thanks, guys, for all the pointers.
i'ma go practise more.
and Rice, what you were doing in my video looks exactly like what i used to do! haha!
and you have atushi and yazuru cobra-ing?
man! that's gotta be tight. the only 3 people have in videos doing cobras are Taco, Shrimp (from breakin'), and Kei.
ps: Guitarnbass, that shirt was given to me by my mother! haha i dont know where she got it, but it was the first time i was wearing it, haha! all my pals were like "whoa. nice shirt." hahaha...

Ive been tryin to Cobra (hehehe reminds me of the episode of the Simpson wen Bart is chained to Homer... and Homer gets his night terrors LOL)... for a few months, proli not the correct way (with foundations)... my chest rolls are okay, but the arms n legs doesnt look kind of right
I recently got the "Kei - Cobra + Waves" too...
I rekon Psyk's attempt looked more like a Cobra (not even sure if it the correct name, heard its a part of the style called 'Snakin', makes sense!)...
The descritpon u had sounds correct
Rice... looks like his doin waves, but it does look like it a bit
If only i have a camera, ill post my attempt
I found out that ur arm movements are very important to make it look good
Just keep practicing, one of us will get it!
A few definition that i use to describe dance in general
Dance: Movements done to portray the music.
Dance styles: Specific movements done to portray the music.

mm... Like i said, i was bad at descriptions lol.
psyk: yeah, as sang-un said about the chest being left, then the hips be the right, thats what i sortve meant when the torso and hips have to look like they're seperated. If the torso is out front, then the hips must be set back. As for the head, I guess he knows more than me because he does them pretty well.. or does he? havent seen that clip floating around.. But yeah, thats what i also meant about bobbing your head around like a snake attacking his prey. Another thing probably would make it look MUCH cleaner is pulling forward your chest as far as you can and pulling shoulders out as far as you can (practice this to stretch? i dont know). if it sounds confusing, i tried making a diagram lol:
o <--- head
|
|
| <---- Leg
o
< - - <-- arm next to it
|
|
o
--> <-- sorta tuck in stomach
|
|
... too much internet fun for one night XD.
SOON as i get a hold of a camera.. I'll post SOMETHING on this site (I hope).
Blah, good luck learning everyone XD.
PS. Poppinrice, I saw the clip too, I'd say seperate the torso and hips more also just as with psyk.
Can someone also post the kei clip too?? im curious now.. but idk where to get it, its not at popping.org anymore ><..

haha PoppinRice... yeah... if we just keep at it we'll get it down. haha.
Guitarnbass: i'm trying to find somewhere that has that video... if i can't then i guess i'll have to encode the video to a wmv or avi format, then post it up here for ya. i'll get back asap.
and stretching... i figured that it was one of my biggest flaws because unlike alot of people, i dont have a broad shoulders. damn i've always wanted broad shoulders! i've got a funny body shape, probably due to army training and due to the fact that i've just started to walk again...
my upper torso is of a rather average size... but my triceps are rather bulging because of the way i do my exercises in camp.
then when it comes down to the waist, i get wider haha...
and then it gets narrow after my thighs.
like a big letter "O"! haha.
but we'll just keep at it!
i'll prolly try to post another vid in a week or two.

alright here's the Kei clip...
i had to encode it into wmv format so that it could fit into the servers here.
enjoy, those of you who havent seen it.
(note, i've been trying to do my cobra exactly like how Kei does it.)

....uuhh all i can tell u -pSyk- is that ur too tense in the torso. let loose or keep it loose while u rotate ur shoulders. i would say that the best way is to start out rubbin ur shoulders against ur neck while doin the move.... thn gradually move outwards. but w/e i got problemz w/ them aswell

SideMosquito... thanks... hmm now that you mentioned it... yes i agree, when i was doing that cobra my abs were totally tightened...
hmm. let loose. thanks!
and just for the fun of it, for those who havent seen this...
i think this clip should be a cobra too...
it's taken from the movie Breakin.
Shrimp does it... really freaky. like an alien.
his back... caves in and out... like his body's hollow.
it's... really animated.
i dont know if this is really a cobra but i think it is.
