What wins an (up)rock battle? - 11-21-2007, 05:33 AM

I have been reading all the great posts on here lately! Thanks for all the knowledge.

This question is for Buz and PJAY! I asked this on the dynasty board but i think it is very important. So i figured i would cover it here too. I have been out here in Europe and have danced a few people who were trying to rock me. Nothing serious but mostly just out of bordem. But As i was dancing these guys who throwing a million and one burns at me and hardly dancing with no jerks, the crowd goes crazy for them!!!bboy crowd that is. I realized how misunderstood the dance is out here still. I got to give major props to Wary for being one of the only rockers out here!

So i want to know what wins a rock contest? or a rock battle? and how does a battle differ from a contest? Is it the man with the most burns, the hardest jerks the best freestyle, knowledge of music????? what do you guys think is most important?

Much respects

Funny but I just posted an answer to this in another thread before reading this one.

Here's what I said:

"One thing I want to focus on and want to drop on the new cats. I totally understand that when anyone starts something new, you usually copy from someone who's already successful at it. Everyone is gonna have their favorite Rocker style, be it Buz, King Uprock, Lil Dave etc. However, I've noticed lately that a lot of new cats stop dancing and perform mimes to the words or sounds way too much. Don't get it twisted and think this is the way you have to Rock. OG Rockers that Buz mentioned, never stopped dancing and let their Burns flow with Jerks and Freestyle. Yes they would stop to do a Freeze, Sleeper or throw a Burn or a hand gesture BUT the majority of the song was danced to."

Even King Uprock will tell you that when he started he Burned more than danced but when he says "Burned", he didn't mean stand there and just throw Burns like a clown. He meant performed flowing Jerks and Burns and did not Freestyle. He was then mentored to learn to Freestyle because if he danced against a more seasoned Rocker, he would lose by being out danced.

Now when I judge a Rock contest, I always look for the cat that's continuously dancing while cleverly incorporating Burns... BUT all this MUST be done with dope Jerks along with finesse and STYLE! That's a winner in my book!

Peace

Great Post P-jay ....

hey there gumby lol.. ok let me give you the different of a battle and a contest ... a battle you can go all the way right from the beggining and tired your ass off because you can go get oxygen and come back and you are also more loose because you don't have them butterflys in your stomach and you don't need to paste yourself and best of all ..THERE ARE NO RULESSSSSSS !!!

Now in a contest you need to paste yourself and this is how it goes when you are in a contest your opponent might go crazy and for some reason he picks up the crowd with a move and when you here the crowd go crazy you need to paste yourself and don't let that bother you ..for an example when a picture gives up a gran-slam he needs to focus and get back on track because throwing harder is not going to get him on track he needs to focus on his mechanics and make a good salection of pitches and also locations...

so there is no different with rocking when them cats starts to go crazy you need to step back and when he slows down you start your moves so that people can focus on what you have and are doing..just amaging if 2 bboys were to breaking at the same time for atleast a minute how can you focus on who's better is almost like two people talkiing at the same time .. no contest there ...

ok if I was judging a contest I look for style and beat catchers also rockers that are dancing because they love what they are doing not rockers that keeps looking at the judges when they don't even have the skills and I also look for rockers that can stay focus because by focusing the hit all the right beats ..a rocker that just rocks blind and of beat has no chance in me picking them .. ok here's a good example ..Tiny love is a pretty good rocker and has come a long way and when he's rocking by himself and he's focus he throws all the right moves ..but when he's in a contest he seems to loose his focus and the rock dance disapears and so does all his moves...

how do you win a conetst ?

focus.

style.

on beat yerks.

catching beats.

charater.

original.

BUZ TOUCH OF ROCK !

Ok here's my thory of winning

Wow... on the nail... for real.

Now about Tiny... he's an excellent Rocker BUT dancing alone... once confronted he loses focus. I love him and wish he would get that under control - he would be one of the best new school Rockers period!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH GUYS!!!! I think it is important to help the upcoming rockers who are coming from a bboy prespective understand what it takes to win. Alot of kids who get into bboying now mimic what they see in contests....And the whole scene has adjusted it style to suit the judges at different times. SO i thought if you guys told them what it takes to win a contest they might relate to it better!! Cause alot of bboys train to win contests....It gives them some goals to achieve and may help them focus in on what they what to accomplish withen the dance. Although there aren´t many rock contests nowdays...but hopefully things will start happening soon!!

Pjay i love what you said about being able to dance the whole song and not to stop dancing just to throw a burn. That is one of the hardest things about rocking, doing everything all at once for an extended period of time. For example whenever i have seen clips of myself dancing and do real good for a song or too, but by the 3rd song or the end of a long song, my arms stop moving, just hanging by my side and my dancing turns to just walking or stepping!!!! When you lose energy it is really hard to maintain hand movements head movements, and just to keep dancing in general. Then hitting some power jerks!!!! forget about it!!!

Thanks again yall

YA BOY BANDIDO!!!

Hey bandit you are comparing bboy with rocking ..Man that a lead of it's own ..there's no way that anyone can compare bboying contest with Up-Rocking not even that fact that there top-rocking has a look of up-rocking you see any bboy can top-rock and when they don't have anymore moves they can easily cover it with going down into bboying moves but not in rocking my brother you start rocking and you finish rocking and it's like you said your arms would go down your head is not moving like it did in the beggining of the first song and your yerks well your yerks they just starts to look like jumping jacks,,, nuttin against bboying my respect to the bboy world but the bboying preparation of a contest is way defferent than the rocking one..you see in bboying you can pratice all the way to the days of the contest and in rocking well you need to chill atleast two to three days before the contest because you need that energy ..I remeber going to this up-rock contest and I tell you I watched Tiny love ..ha ha ha sorry tiny don't mean to pick on you ..you know I love you my touch of rock brother .. but anyway he danced from the begining of the event to when they annouce his name to get up in the rock circle well he started with all this energy but 5 minutes into the song you could see he didn't have the energy I mean he had the style but it was in a slow motion paste it almost looked like he was not feeling the music...

what do you think P-jay ....

100% agreed Buz.

Tiny would understand that it's not that we're picking on him and that it's all love in trying to help him. RC and I been trying to do it for a while, lol.

Trust me when I say, that other new school cats do the same thing. They look awesome dancing alone but when against someone, they lose focus and their style seems to change.

It's very hard to get Tiny to stop dancing! LOL

FOR THE RECORD: Chuck Norris always wins an Uprock contest... even if he's not dancing! lolololol

^ That post forgot to add the greatest fact to date, in reference to Chuck Norris; The man got his @ss handed to him on the set of Way of the Dragon by Bruce Lee. Norris admitted in an interview back in the 70's that both he and Lee were really sharing blows w/each other on the set, and there is still footage floating around somewhere in the Golden Harvest vaults of Lee taking him down a number of times. Now "Bruce Lee" would have been the world's GREATEST rocker.....!

Peace,

-Lethal
