Uprock Music (Mainly for PJay, Buz, Wary) - 11-19-2007, 10:58 PM

After reading the thread on the maxone vs. machine battle, I figured I'd bring this up. As I DJ myself, I'd love to know your thoughts on what makes a great uprock track and what are some of the classics in the event that I have the chance to DJ an uprock battle. Figured it'd be a good idea to round out my crates.

I'll probably sticky this thread after a while.

These are the ones I know of from the Dynasty Rockers site...
Rock Creek Park - Blackbyrds
The Mexican - Babe Ruth
Rocket In The Pocket - Cerrone
Melting Pot - Booker T & The MG's
Expansions - Lonnie Liston Smith
Theme From SWAT - Rythym Heritage
Shaft In Africa - Johnny Pate
Apache - Incredible Bongo Band
Sex Machine - James Brown
Give It Up Turn It Loose - James Brown
Yellow Sunshine - Yellow Sunshine Band
Listen To Me - Baby Huey
UFO - ESG
Drummer's Beat - Herman Kelly & Life
Scorpio - Dennis Coffey
Ride Sally Ride - Dennis Coffey
Cloud Nine - The Temptations
It's Just begun - Jimmy Castor Bunch
Soul Makossa - Manu Dibango
Films - Gary Newman
Woman - Barabas
In The Bottle - Gil Scott Heron
Big Beat - Billy Squire
Funky Penguin - Rufus Thomas
Bongo Rock - Incredible Bongo Band

Castles in the Sky - The Futures
Fire - Osibisa
Life on Mars - Dexter Wansel
Bra - Cymande
Hum Along and Dance - The Jacksons
Life of the Party - The Jacksons
Mirrors of My Mind - The Jacksons
What You Don't Know - The Jacksons
Galaxy - War
Rain 2000 - Titanic
Crystal World - Crystal Glass
Gotta Get a Knutt - The New Birth
I Can Understand It - The New Birth
Super Sporm - Captain Sky
Power - Earth, Wind & Fire
New Bell - Manu Dibango

Know of anymore that can be added to the list?

I recently posted this on Bboy World:

"When I tell someone that a certain jam is not an Uprock song, I mean more so for battling. There are many dope Funk/Soul songs that were recorded that are unknown and may be great for Rocking but we have to remember that there are key songs that are MUST for battling. More importantly and IMO, the current Rocker/Bboy world has heard "The Mexican" a million times BUT how many honestly you say can totally tear it up on a Rocking Line... feel me? And if so... the essential songs can always be interpreted differently every time, which makes it so fresh. If the cats battling don't know a certain song, then it makes for a wack battle IMO."

Uprock Gems - 11-20-2007, 08:58 AM

That list has "Shaft" by Issac Hayes, which is a Disco track - some consider it the first Disco song ever Est. 1971. I don't know why it's on the DR list. I must've made a mistake somewhere - diablo. Also "Shaft in Africa" is by Johnny Pate.

Here are some gems that should be on that list:

Castles in the Sky - The Futures
Fire - Osibisa
Life on Mars - Dexter Wansel
Bra - Cymande
Hum Along and Dance - The Jacksons
Life of the Party - The Jacksons
Mirrors of My Mind - The Jacksons
What You Don't Know - The Jacksons
Galaxy - War
Rain 2000 - Titanic
Crystal World - Crystal Glass
Gotta Get a Knutt - The New Birth
I Can Understand It - The New Birth
Super Sporm - Captain Sky
Power - Earth, Wind & Fire
New Bell - Manu Dibango

Now I'm not a prop seeker BUT I know that a lot of you cats out there never heard of some of these songs. THEREFORE, don't go and download them and then pretend you knew them all along... okay?!! Give respect when someone drops jewels on you.

Peace

PS: I got more serious Uprock songs that if y'all heard them y'all would lose your minds! I usually save them for the cats that show themselves very serious to this dance!

LOL... hey I'm just kidding guys but also am serious.

Think of it this way. If you did martial arts all your life and developed to the level of a master, would you drop all your skills to cats that don't have their heart and soul in it! I will even bring it on a Hip Hop level. Not that I'm an asshole but I've been nice with Graff for a while and for years corney, fake-ass cats have asked for my alphabet and style KNOWING that they just want it to have it and not out of the respect of being a student with heart, soul and passion. That's all I'm sayin.

But anyway... here's a gift: Put Your Music Where Your Mouth Is - Olympic Runners

A cap ??

what does that mean bandit .. I think p-jay has a point is like this you know how it took you alomost 5 to 6 month to figure out the name forever we rock ,,, well amaging somebody from cali would come out with a crew call forever we rock ..I don't think your concern would be the name but the time you took and dedication and all the decisions that you flunged from new york to sanfran and also all the meeting with your boys ,,, to finally get this name and for someone to just say from one day to another ...I'm going to use the name that I saw in a video clip forever we rock,,,Man you and your crew would flip!!~
