Uprocking -
03-31-2004, 02:19 PM
Rocking is the True name of the Dance.
Its' name changed to UpRock after people thinking they were going to a rock concert and not a Uprock Jam. Uprock is also known as Rocking, or Brooklyn Rock. Uprocking and Toprocking although similar are two individual dances. Uprocking is for the Rockers - people who dance an entire song with Freestyle, Jerks and Burns. Toprocking is for the Bboys as a wind up before they hit the ground for there Footwork. A burn is how you humiliate your opponent and it can be executed during the Freestyle or break of a song. It is how you listen to the music and create your diss to that individual while still dancing. Usually there is a reciprical burn one block one type of Jerk that is shared among two rockers. This gives each rocker a chance to burn the other. I am not saying you should burn all the time, you should also know how to block or evade a burn. Sometimes this is even more impressive. Remember it is a dance and you have to remain in a line formation to keep your space, what I mean is: a rocker is territorial and you keep your opponent from taking over your dance space. A BBoy does Toprock it is a simple way of gathering your energy before you go to the floor. Here is a hint for those who want to Top Rock in a circle: Look at your six step. Now try that same six step standing up. Once you get to the fifth and six step skip up switch and begin the one. This was a simple step to learning how to change your toprock for a footwork. Peace and blessing to all new BBoys.& BGirls. Break Easy 79 " Breaking In Style" |

The uprock is a battle right? and its made up of ur own freestyle moves that go to the beat. but isnt there a basis u need to learn first like the The Jerk Step, Bboy lunge, shuffle, shuffle, drop move, and Burns? if so can someone plz post a detailed tutorial so i can use them and put them into a combination it would be much appreciated.

Check the mixing b-boying with Uprocking thread. Uprock is an entirely different dance from b-boying and it shouldn't be mixed together. As Stiff_UK said, doing so is really only doing a disservice to both danceforms.

Okay it does sound like you've got a rough idea.
Jerks and Burns are a part of rocking, there's the freestyle part too, which is a big part. Read through some of the threads in this section and you'll get an idea. Look especially for posts by Break Easy and PJay71. Detailed tutorials have been requested before, but rocking isn't really a dance that can be learned that way. I have NO idea where Branchburg is, but the main population of rockers is to be found in Brooklyn. One or two members of Dynasty Rockers ( www.dynastyrockers.com ) are based outside New York though. Pretty sure Numbers lives on the West coast. (Though my american geography is appaling, I could be very wrong with location) There's a member in Dijon too, but that's not really any help to you. Anyway, about the only way to learn to rock properly, is to learn from a rocker, and unless you can get to brooklyn or happen to live near someone like Numbers, then you'll find it kinda hard. I'd reccomend taking a look at dancers like Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, The Nicholas Borthers and similar. Also dances like Salsa, and The Hustle. These are some of the major influences on the freestyle part of uprock and if you get into that kind of movement you could find it easier to learn once you do get together with some rockers. Again, take a read around the other threads in this section. Hope that helps. God Bless. |

hey whats up stiff? yes i do live on the west coast las vegas to be exact. so does danny boy, and cold chris. foots lives in sacremento. we invite eveybody to learn the history, but when it comes to actually learn steps............... like you said check out some of the earliest influences of uprock like gene kelly, sala dancers, etc. the way they move can totally be applied to 60s and 70s funk and soul music.
everytime i rock its a performance you know?thats how i approach it. strong eye contact with the audience, or your opponent. make poeple understand what the song means to you. thats what makes a great uprocker in my opinion. |

Dudes Dancing name is Critter btw. this is the email i got from him about the event, just in case its of any use to you. "dec 2nd and 3rd in SLC Utah Wreck-O-Nize 3 on 3 breakin competition $1500 for 1st judges: kujo, poeone and erik dj's: sake, Prozak and the Crate dwellers $5 each day to get in. But it would still be pretty cool if a rocker like yourself could be there, cuz chances are i'd throw down whatever i was doing to get a quick lesson in maybe, or even just the chance of seeing it live. |

I have no idea why I said Paris.
I know you're from Dijon! Dunno how that happened. Numbers - I will do. Has Wary, PJay or anyone like that got you on AIM or MSN? If they do and it's OK with you, get them to pass on your user name and I'll talk to you that way. Save you putting your personal address on the site. Talk soon. |
