The History Of Rock ! -
05-04-2007, 01:03 AM
During the late late 60's it came to the attention that Rock dancing the percussion parts of body movement , along with Rock songs such as Just Begun ,Shaft In Africa ,Crystal World ,BT E xpress, Rock creek park Rare Earth get ready , Sex Machine and Listen to me were most popular for dancing Rock by youth of the late 60's in brooklyn., and then later through out boroughs around New York City area, independently isolated and repeated these parts of the Rock dance for the purpose of street Gangs and Youth dance life style . The favourite types of music were traditionally the Music from Funk , Rock and Latin songs, often featuringp PERCUSSION !!( The word, "percussion", has evolved from Latin terms: "percussio" (which translates as "to beat, strike" in the musical sense, rather than the violent action), It's where back in 1968 the ROCK dance Relates to ..When as a youth a friend of the family by the name of Raul aka Bareta also good friends with the late Rock dancer Rubberband and Pete connected this Word ( PERCUSSION ) to the dance Rock from the late 60's.. which today we still seek for many many more answers such as how it started ? did breaking come out of rocking ? who dicided to name the most popular move a yerk ? Is the word Yerk / with a y or a j ? who was really the first to dance or create the dance rock ? and the questions keeps piling up as today UP-ROCK VS TOP ROCK is the new bboy move a flavor from the original rockers ?...and the most popular one was brooklyn the first to dance rock !!! And yes the responds are there and they come in ...In many phrase but as I sit here and listen to all this I smile because never in a million years I would of thought that the dance that I saw in affect during my youth year would inpact so many people today in the year 2000 because during the 70's I was thinking one thing is the year 2000 the end of the world....and today here I am living in the year 2000 and asking now wondering who really created the dance ROCK !!!! IT IS WHY THE DANCE IS A BEAUTIFUL AND INTERESTING PART OF MY LIFE THAT EVERYONE IS IN SEARCH OF THE TRUTH !! ASK LIL DAVE FROM LIL DAVE ROCKERS AND HE WILL GIVE YOU THE EXPIRIENCE THAT HE ENJOY DURING THE EARLY 70'S .. ASK BUZ FROM TOUCH OF ROCK AND HE WILL GIVE YOU THE EXPIRIENCE THAT I ENJOY DURING THE MID 70'S OF HIS TIME .. ASK KING ROCK AND HE WILL GIVE YOU THE EXPIRIENCE THAT HE ENJOY DURING THE 70'S /80'S OF HIS TIME... SUPPORT BKLYN ROCK 2007 THANK YOU BUZ TOUCH OF ROCK ! |

I bboy to discover and extend my physical abilities, to better understand the correlation of music and dance, and to further personalize the culture of bboying. What do you bboy for?
Hip Hop is a revolution of artistic standards. A revolution of music from beat-making, dance from bboying, poetic knowledge from freestyling, drawn/sprayed art from graffiti. Who're still aiming to revolutionize? Or are these simply standards of a newer genre nowadays? -Unofficial Deignorizer |

through out the mid-60's and 70's; Brooklyn was home to many Street Gangs. Rubberband Man and Apache were all too familiar with these violent times as they grew up in the Bushwick area. They often associated with the Devil's Rebels and other local Brooklyn Gangs. Although they socialized within a dangerous circle of friends, getting into trouble was not their ultimate goal. They loved to dance; mainly to Salsa, Soul and Funk music and wanted to channel their energy and talent towards something new. So, they created a new dance-form called "Rocking". Rubberband Man and Apache would dance in public while listening to the radio. They used a mixture of moves from Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Salsa and later the Hustle. As the dance developed, body movements called "Jerks" invented by Rubberband and hand gestures called "Burns", would be added to imitate a fight against an opposing dancer. Rubberband Man and Apache morphed these dance styles, movements and gestures together to create a unique and original street dance. Many gangs began to perform this dance. It became a commonplace to see gang members hanging out in corners Rocking against each other. Thus, Rocking became a competitive dance that caught on very quickly. By the early 70's Rocking became a true local dance form - not just a "Gang" dance. Many non-Gang-related youths from around the area learned to Rock and created their own Uprock Crews. You could witness Rocking at block parties, teen dances and many other festive gatherings. A man by the name of "Crazy Rob" organized the first Rock Contest in existence.
Competition was fierce and Brooklyn became a breeding ground for intense dance contest or "Battles".The dance caught on so quickly, and had spread so widely, that the name had to be changed. The term "Rock" in a "Rock Contest", would confuse many "Rock Music" enthusiasts. They would arrive at Battles expecting a Rock & Roll concert. Therefore, Rocking became "Uprocking". It was the same dance with a different name. The name change did not affect the rate of dance growth and popularity. Many young men were competing and many Uprock Crews were organized. Crews like Touch of Rock, Nasty Rockers, Mysterious Rockers, MTC Jitterbugs, Dynamic Spinners, Non Stop Rockers, All Star Rockers, Symphony Rockers, IND Dancers, Supreme Rockers, Down to Rock, Fast Rockers, Disco Rockers, Fantasy Rockers, Just Begun Rockers, Romantic Rockers, Holy Rock Smokers, Lil Dave Rockers, Rock With Class, Universal Dancers, One On One Rockers, Phazzic Rockers, Floor Master Dancers and the Latin Timbales. Many non-Gang-related youths from around the area learned to Rock and created their own Uprock Crews. Manny Figueroa, Eddie Figueroa, Danny Boy and Carlos were the first Dynasty members. Eddie Figueroa learned how to Rock from Rubberband Man personally and passed the steps on to Papo, Clark, and Manny in tribute to the memory of the creator, Rubberband Man. Dynasty Rockers revolved around leading dancers like Danny Boy, Carlos, Ralph, Tony, and Gary "Crumb". Due to their fantastic Uprock ability, the popularity of the Dynasty Rockers grew. This gave way to several branches of the Crew. The Junior Dynasty Dancers and the Girl Dynasty Dancers were founded and began to Uprock on-the-scene. Not only did the Dynasty Rockers bring new skills and style into Uprocking but they were the first non-gang affiliated Crew to flash the word "Rockers" on their Colors. Originally, Colors were used by Gangs to identify themselves. Because Gangs were still prominent and due to the Colors, Dynasty was mistaken for a Gang so they had to explain that they were strictly a dance Crew. This began to catch-on and more Crews began "Rocking Colors". "We used shirts or jackets and put our Crew name on the back in a circle formation. The shirts, jackets, and sweaters were our Colors and the letters were our Rockers" By the late 1970's Uprock had it's own identity as a authentic dance form, just as Hustle and Salsa. There were hundreds of crews in Brooklyn by this time. At some Uprock contest you would have an Apache line of over 50 Rockers Battling at once. Best believe it was intense. Uprock was taken very seriously by it's advocates and still the high stakes for Battling often included money, women, bragging rights, and Colors. Again, if you lost the Battle, you lost your nickname and your Crew name - this was the ultimate spoil. In 1980 the biggest title in Brooklyn was up for grabs. The title was "King Uprock". This Battle took place at the Yellow Sunshine Club, on Bushwick Ave. All the best Uprockers in Brooklyn came together to compete in this one contest. Among the Crews were; Touch of Rock, Lil Dave Rockers, Romantic Rockers, One on One Rockers, Rock with Class and Dynasty Rockers. Among the approximate 25 contestants were top Rockers such as; Cuz, Duz, Noel, Lil Dave, Carlos, Danny Boy, Tony, Lil Eddie, Lil Tito, Lil Bebop, Andre and Kojak. This intense Battle went down to the wire and the last two Rockers were Lil Dave and Ralph Casanova aka "RC". The Battle was won by Ralph Casanova, who change his name to king uprock for those who past away, lock up and those who stop dancing. By the mid-80's Uprock began to wither down. Bboying or Breakin became more popular, especially by the younger generation. Many Uprockers got married, acquired full-time jobs, became Bboys themselves or had other situations that took them out-of-the-game. The only way that Uprock was present during this time was in a modified form called "Top Rock", which was done by Bboys as their Break intro. Top Rock is not the original form of the Brooklyn Rock Dance but it was the end of an era. Thus, Uprocking became dormant. Numbers started making regular trips to NYC in 1995, breaking at events like the Rock Steady 18th Anniversary. There he met many people and one of them was none other than Burn One. King Uprock was also present, although Numbers hadn't met him yet. The following year, Numbers was in NYC, this time for the Zulu Nation Anniversary, which ended up being cancelled. So instead Numbers went to a jam at the Wetlands called "Break Beats". Halfway through the jam, in walks about 8 or 10 guys wearing Crew Colors on their shirts. Unknown to Numbers these Uprockers had dis agree with Bobbito Garcia over the content of a "Stress Magazine" article about Uprock. So King Uprock and Burn each gathered various Uprockers such as Gary Crumb, Spice FMD, Mr. Loose, Mike, Charlie Uprock etc. Their purpose was to show and prove to anyone and everyone that the real Uprockers are from Brooklyn and still in effect. That was the first time Numbers had witnessed real Uprockers in a Apache line and also participated. King Uprock and Numbers would meet again in 1997, at the same event. This is when Numbers approached Burn about coming to Florida for the Bboy Masters Pro-Am. Burn suggested King Uprock should go instead. So with rumors that King Uprock was coming to Pro-Am people did not know what to expect. On the second day of the event demonstrations were performed after the panels. In the afternoon at the Power Studios in Downtown Miami, Ralph "King Uprock" Casanova took to the floor. Performing to the New Birth, " Gotta Get A Knutt". The crowd was amazed and the world had changed that evening. This was the first time true Uprock had been presented in this manor outside of New York City. Since then, it's been Dynastys' mission to preserve The Rock Dance and share it with the world. Upon launching this website and working with video, audio, panel discussions, workshops, as well as, hosting events such as the very first Dynasty Rockers Anniversary. These events introduce the Original Rockers, including Apache [co-founder of Uprock] and other Outlaws . They support, dance and speak with the public so that this dance and its history will never die. In 2005 King Uprock was invited to Total Session 7 in France. This was the first time that an Original Brooklyn Rocker ever represented The Rock Dance internationally. While there, he proved once again that he is still more than capable of dominating the competitive level of today's dancers. More importantly, he brings to the table over 30 years of knowledge and wisdom to the world of Hip Hop which is invaluable in keeping this culture alive. Presently, Dynasty Rockers has Sixteen active members. Active King Uprock, Break Easy,Fed Rolle, Amigo, Numbers,Danny boy 2, karen Lish, Dan Lish Moysex, BGirl Ther, Crazy Smooth, Cold, Foots ,Wary Tiny Love and DJ Emmere. King Uprock heads the crew as leader and teacher. He currently teaches classes and host events in Brooklyn and Queens as well. In 2009, Dynastys' goal is to continue to dance, educate and develope new Rockers so that they may preserve the form for the future and beyond. Now that I found many of the first generation rockers. The TRUE of the dance and those who post lies about there history will be proven. I have taught many dancer to keep this dance alive and many have not given me props so that every one will have them at there event to act like old school pioneer. Forever We Rock who I taught has been the best rock crew of the 2005. Now they are teaching in the west coast to help me keep this dance alive. peace |
