I'm not sure man but I think uprock is like two people toprocking, but in a different style, like they're attacking each other but not really making contact. Toprock is toprocking =P

I agree. Lets see what other people think. I dont think there should be a uprock section, if its the same as toprock... |

I disagree.
Toprock is a simple rock to the beat in which you begin to introduce your sets. Uprock is a more "aggressive" or such form where you are engaged in a non-contact combat. It moves to a particular pattern. You are DOWN on the FIRST beat and UP on the FOURTH beat. I.e. the beat is 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & DROP & back up to attack position or whatever & 2 & 3 & Drop & up, etc. Therefore, Uprock has become it's own category and form. And thus, IT SHOULD NOT BE THE SAME AS TOPROCK. But by all means use it. ![]() |

Humanoid is mostly right but uprocking actually PREDATES toprocking by a few years at least. Whereas toprock is one element of bboying, uprocking is a dance unto itself, just like bboying and popping and locking and boogaloo etc. It has it's own moves (jerks burns, etc which should NOT be incorporated into your tops unless it's just in practice) and it has it's own beat structure just as humanoid explained.
Don't quote me on this but according to PJAY (the mod and the REAL uprocking expert on this site) uprocking has influenced bboying significantly, contributing to the expansion and refinement of toprocking. In fact alot of toprocking you see nowadays is in one way or another, taken from uprocking. Also whereas bboying descends from Kapoeira (sp?) and other dances, uprocking steps are taken from dances such as salsa and are so complex as to be a separate dance form apart from bboying. So in answer to your question, they're NOT the same, having evolved from different pioneers: rocksteady crew-ken swift, crazy legs, mr wiggles for bboying etc and rubber band man (RIP) etc in uprocking. They also are NOT to be combined in your bboying if you're battling and if you're wanting to learn uprocking, know your facts, it doesn't come from toprock, modern toprock borrows heavily from uprocking. Sorry if some of that was unintelligible but it's really late and i'm going to bed now. Hope i helped, Peace |

Nice post bboyjz.
Listen alot of guys thought they had the right answers but they were totally off. Also, it's apparent that no one went into the threads that break-down what Uprock really is. I know people don't like to read but sometimes it's worth it to understand. No Uprock is not Toprock period. Uprock is it's own dance and worthy of it's own section. It's still very underground even though it's older than Bboying. Uprock was created directly from Salsa and the Soul and Disco era... not Breakbeats. If two guys are Toprocking together, they are NOT Uprocking... they may think they are but are not. Please bros, just refer to the "stickies" and study-up if you're interested. Afterwards if you have questions I'll be happy to help. Happy Holidays & Peace. |

I understand... but yes, they are different.
Again, I suggest anyone who really want to learn Uprock to pick-up King Uprock's DVD. Mainly because of the great footage. You will see the big difference. Alot of Bboys are using this to learn and are making good progress. Trying to attempt to Uprock on your own will most likely get you nowhere. Most Bboys are gonna copy other Bboys or what they think they know is right and just waste time. Peace |

There's no guide on this or any forum. Uprock is something that must be seen to understand. I'm the webmaster of the Dynasty Rokcers site and am presently uplaoding it with footage and info etc. A tutorial DVD is in the works as well.
Send an email here to request the DVD: kinguprock@dynastyrockers.com |
