The Elements of Rocking/Uprock - 02-09-2005, 05:16 PM

One: You must know, learn and feel the Soul & Funk tracks of the 60's-70's. The Soul/Funk music of that era is the basis of Rocking.

Two: The Jerk Step, ( Not the Bboy lunge, shuffle, shuffle, drop move either - not the fake Uprock displayed in "Beat Street". )

Three: Freestyle Moves, ( Not Capoeria, flips, powermoves etc. ). Remember, Rocking is a combo of Salsa, Hustle and NYC Freestyle. Again, if you do not know these forms.... how can you be Uprocking?

Four: Burns, ( Not jumping into or onto your opponent and looking like your trying to do a flying kick! ) You don't have to burn with every move - burn with style and to the lyrics or tempo of the song... STYLE & FLOW people!

If anyone has any questions regarding this post and Rocking, don't hesitate to hit me up. I don't mind helping out. Don't get at me with nonsense. Thinking you know all about Rocking. Because the truth is... Rocking came from Brooklyn, NYC. If you wasn't around and down in that time back in the day - chances are you don't know the dance at all. So don't be proud... be humble so you can learn something, I am here to help. ONE.

so when you say rocking is a combo of salsa, hustle, and nyc freestyle, then does it have to be done in a certain way?

Yes it does. Even though every Rockers has their own style the basic elements are those dance forms, along with their steps.

Yo Pjay - ive been going to salsa classes (which absolutely rocks by the way its the best dance in the world (for dancing with girls ) - which parts of salsa are best to incorporate into my rocking style then? I was gonna just have fun and throw it all in in my usual random manner - but are there any basic rules or guidance i need to know?

i.e.

From what i can tell almost everything i learnt in two hours of lessons can be applied, (throwout turns, mambo, basic step etc.) except the bits about dancing with someone.

I was thinking throwout turn straight into mambo with a burn would be a nice little combo for example.

That is if you know salsa???!!!

y'know; I just started dancing again.

DOPE BROTHA!!!! UK Salsero's in the house!!! I love it when cats take shit real seriously, like taking dance lessons to better themselves - that's showing real love and dedication.

Very proud of you dog! Yeah, now it's just applying some of those steps into your Uprock Freestyle. See, in Salsa, the couple will sometimes separate and "go-off" in front of each other, almost as battling. It can be described as Salsa Freestyle... it's very traditional and alot of classes don't teach that. However, I'm sure with what you've learned you can apply into your Freestyle. Remember, the music will tell you how to dance, when to Jerk and when to Freestyle - feel the music and go for it!!!

Can you start a list of rocking songs? then you could just lock it, and make edits every once in a while when you remember another song that could go on the list, so that way we know more so what tracks to get the feel for?

Until one learns some Salsa and Hustle, what is something they can do in the meantime to help with the freestyle?

For Burns, is there a limit of what you can and cannot do? what are the guidlines?

Bboying is what you make it.

Everyone should check-out this link and read the above statement on the page:

http://www.dynastyrockers.com/music.html

They're more songs and I will post them asap.

There's no limit to the amount of Burns you can do. However, it's not the quantity it's the quality of Burns. But if you're one that can Burn like hell, with style to boot - then you the man.

aight, but for the burns, is there anything you cannot due, cuz for when that incorrect Zulu Gremilin instrution thing was posted, he said it could be anything like pulling out their tongue and cutting it, and so forth, is that part true, what are the guidelines of the types of burns you can do?

Bboying is what you make it.

Yo PJAY71. I checked out the link you posted and it is hooked up! It's got everything a newbie like me needs to get to the roots without all the bull. I saw a Canadian, from Quebec even, in the Dynasty crew. That's awesome. I noticed that some members were bboys too and I wanted to know if I should keep bboying and wait till I can get some salsa classes before attempting uprock. I was glad that someone said the uprock in beat street is fake. I noticed the Temptations on the list of artists to check out. NO big surprise there. I wanted to know what you thought of the song heatwave by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. I'm rockin to know that music I have been listening too years before I even started bboyin, is fundamental. Is all soul and rythmic music useful in uprock or is it only certain bands. Thanks for your dedication to this sight. I agree, you gotta be humble to learn. Pride comes before the fall. Peace.

First up thanks pjay and the others from dynasty who have been dropping all the knowledge so far, I understand a hell of a lot more about the roots of bboying and think I am starting understand what uprocking really is, this stuff has been really inspirational and if I ever get enough dollars I definitely want to make the journey NYC to learn first hand as much as I can. I've watched the clips on the dynasty site(mean!) and am learning some salsa (off some friends visiting from guatemala) mad fun.

I was just wondering if anyone would care to share some more knowledge on NY freestyling, anything appreciated. Also I read somewhere uprock freestyle includes shakes? if so any descriptions or references? does any of what I'm saying make sense ?

Peace

Thanks... you words & props mean a lot, for real.

Freestyle are steps that you incorporate from dance styles such as Salsa & Hustle, as well as, steps from other dancers like Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and the Nicholas Brothers etc etc. That's why I put those Disco & Loft clips in the Dynasty site downloads - so cats can get an idea of various Freestyle forms.

IMO back-in-the-day NYC had their own flavor of Freestyling, as opposed to the way cats from Cali would Freestyle - if you understand what I mean. However, anyone who ever makes a trip out to Brooklyn to learn will not be dissappointed.

Peace
