ok with my limited knowledge of breakdancing, ill try to put out some tips for ya.
first off, try not to dub the music over the video cuz it messes up wat beats ur trying to hit which also brings me to my next point. it seems that ur thinking too much about what to do and when to do it, try to feel the music(hard to explain through words >_>) and the arms flailing, its a natural movement when you do your toprock so dont rlly think about it either, just let them loose. hmmm next point i would say is to check out some toprock video's that are stickied in this section to find some new variations for ur toprock OH! instead of facing the camera the whole time, try and us all directions to add some style.

ive been bboyin a couple months but still need work on my toprock too haha. good luck!

Oh man, I can give you just one tip and one tip only. And it'll drastically improve your toprock a hundred-fold. Are you ready, are ya?

Mean it.

OHH SNAPPPPP. No seriously, those snares in the beat are there for a reason, i.e. the loudest part of the beat. The tch tch tch parts. Go look it up somewhere if you don't know what a snare is. When you step out do it to the snares, as hard as you possibly can. That's right, just launch your legs out there. Don't worry if you feel retarded 'coz believe me you'll probably look a lot better than how you looked before

Post a video tomorrow/next week/soon of you attempting to step out to the beat HARD and we'll be able to give you other tips to work with. Keep working hard!

it is a lot harder to do than to watch when you first start out. i'm no expert at tops but it prolly what i practice most and what i've learned through practicing is to just listen to the music, let it flow through you and just dance to it. seriously its not all that complicated, just tricky in the begininning. invent some new steps to try out, try to hit the beats, and just listen. listening is key. block out everything and just listen to the music and dance to it. watching vids will help but if you dont practice yourself then it wont get better. dont think about your steps either, like thinking in your mind: okay i'm gonna do an indian step on the right first, then on the left, then hip twist after 4 beats.. etc.

if you think too much it will look super sloppy and just plain bad. so just relax, listen and dance. that's how i learned and my friends say i've got pretty decent tops. if i could get a vid up soon i'll show you mine, but since i'm no pro just watch some others of actual bboys in the meantime lol

haha i have a serious trick that could help u if u really insist on using the music over the vid use the song that ur gonna put on here and put it on ur ipod or mp3 then turn on the music when u turn the camera on.. that way ull hit the beats and ull feel the music....

just something to think about.

I guess it looks okay. As in maybe 6/10 stars, because i think your not putting enough effort in your top rock. Try getting off the ground higher and really commit to your steps. Because for right now it looks like wack cwalking. Anyway kudos and hope this helps. No hate intended. Keep bboying

Alright man, i'm gonna break it down for you.

For me, the number 1 most important thing to toprocking is the MUSIC. That's why Lilou gets some of my mad props even though sometimes he's a dick. You can burn hard just with toprocks.

I highly recommend Yell-o's tutorials. Kickstep, and also try and learn the hip twist. There's a tutorial online at youtube.. I think they called it boyoing, and you can branch it off from those three.

Take a look at this. At around 1:16 you can practice it; it's really hard at first, but keep practicing without music. Then bring it up to speed and then do it with that.

Kick step walk.. or just any toprocks you can find; i'm sure there's a big list on a sticky.
It looks like sometimes you're not putting any effort; and it IS hard to hit beats. I was surprised at the difficulty too.

Hey, when the music's rolling, feel the beat like the snare, as Rath said. The tch tch tch, keep a constant rhythm with that beat only; we can get into the other stuff later. I could see the first two indian steps you were with it; but also.. just forget about how it looks, and focus on the music.

Keep going; just keep it up.

HEYY. 1st... thnx for taking out the time to do this
and now see i cant do the kick part... like in all vids i see tht they kick and hiptwist... i cant do tht for some reason =/

i get confused w/ which leg to kick and which to cross over w/...
also... i THINK i am feeling the music and what i tend to do is get repetitive cuz i`m feeling and music and stuck on one tempo...

also... i feel tht if i go into my own "creative" element... i tend to lose the beat...

so i`m trying to make it unique buh i start missing the beats and go back to my "old" "repetitive" topz...

any help?

Repetitiveness is good. Definitely good; it's your muscle memory! It takes time for people to develop their own toprocks, don't worry about it. Just keep going and keep watching videos so you can get ideas (not their ideas,) but I mean some stuff that you think would look cool.

One tempo? That's good; just hold on to the snares. I mean, it was never meant to be easy. Lots of people are confused when I teach them the hip twist (even though i'm not that great myself).. but really, it takes lots of effort to get it.

Watch the video over and over, go along with it. Watch it over and over again, trust me.

Also, listen to bboy tracks outside of bboying, it'll help you get the beat better too, when you just listen to the music. Keep it up.
