The limits of toprock - 09-26-2006, 07:07 AM

I've read alot of forusm about toprock sicne i'ma newbie and i've been wanting to learn how to bboy proplery

i think toprock is highily important but my problem is learning the toprock.. i've read some guides and ive seen the guide on the basic move by bboy tosh... about the stepping and the whole swinging arms part; but my question is.. how ami supposed to add style and flavor?

i know what style and flavor and i nkow its meant to come out of me but my question is... how do i know when its not a toprock or when it is a toprock?

sometimes i'm messing around and i end up pulling a move from the crip walk or something.... i dont nkow my "limits" of toprocking

can someone define what toprock includes?

anything you want, and alot of your flavour will come from your arm movements, the arm swing you learn in classes is just a basic movement which i personally would never get someone to do, watch and analise a bunch of bboy vids, you'll see alot of the style is in where the arms go and very few if any will use that generic arm swing everyone gets taught. and dont adhere strictly to where the legs go, try double steps, bounces, spins, foot shuffles, the fucking lindy hop............. dont limit yourself, do what feels fun and right. thats where your style and flavour comes from. peace

Word. And as long as you have the foundation of the different toprocks and keep that a little bit in it, you can throw all kinds of stuff in and develop you're own style, it comes with time.

Try watching some bboy battles like Ultimate: Who Can Roast the Most and lots of 1vs1 and 2vs2 battles, DoKnock, Oscor Orosco, in crew battles the toprocks don't get as much focus, smaller battles usually bring it out more. Just watch alot of dope toprocking and try to get inspired, put your own spin on the moves you like best. Hope this helps man,

im not sure where you can find videos on this but there are four styles of toprocking, bronx, brooklyn, queens, and manhattan styles, if you can find out more about those it may help you, i had bboy dyzee demonstrate it in person
