Toprocking and Arms - 09-04-2006, 04:49 PM

Hey, I started breaking in July, and I've been visiting these forums ever since. All the stuff you guys write up are super helpful, and I'd like to thank everyone for that!

Anyways, since I've started, I've been able to learn most of the foundations (thanks to all your tutorials), but I'm just wondering, when toprocking, what should you do with your arms? I mean I know everyone has their own style, but I'm just curious as to what everyone does. Swinging back and forth gets boring real fast.

don't have your arms swinging around like crazy. move them up and down, not from side to side. like boxing, always keep a gaurd up. when you cross step back, whip em, indian step, move your arms like you're tryin to push somethen apart...same motion as moses departing the sea...if you get it haha

If you do any martial arts, punching the air, and pretty much emphasizing the beat with jerky actions with your hands, I find, works pretty well.

Some people are like slinkies. Utterly useless, but rather entertaining to watch when pushed down a flight of stairs.

I cross em up, swing em out, swing em forward, sometimes keep one hand by muh hat, swing em down...wuteva comes to mind! Jus think bout it...toprockin is a DANCE..a hip hop dance...so think bout how ya wuld move ya arms fo' any hip hop movement! Jus put attitude n' flavor into it...have fun wit it dawg!!

Plus if u do ya toprock wit 110% confidence...it looks pretty tight

That's not true. I know that me, and a few others at least do an extensive amount of toprock at school dances. Just as the DJ creates the beat for people to dance to, we encourage -them- to dance more. Hells, basic footwork gets "Woah"s and "woo"s from everyone who doesn't know much, so the hilarity factor in itself is worth it.

The most basic things to do with your arms is open 'em when you step out, close 'em when you come back.

But if you want something more advanced...tell a story with your hands, pretend like your fighting, someone mentioned a boxer above. That was some pretty good advice I got from Alien Ness, If nothing else, protect your face like a boxer and open 'em up every now and then when you step.

Thanks everyone. And yea, it's not that I can't toprock, I was just trying to get more advanced. Telling a story sounds cool. I don't wanna do that hopping thing while pulling pants up that a lot of koreans do. Looks pretty bad.

As for dances, whatever. No one arond here bboys so I get mad props anyways. Not that I care, I just do what I feel like, and if it looks good, all the better. ^_^ Thanks everyone
