Leading or trailing the beat - 08-20-2006, 11:47 AM

Hello everyone !

This topic came up on a group of people at a club, and we ended up with a debate on which one of the styles is more "funkier" to do.

For those who don't know, leading or trailing the beat means whether, e.g. you do indian step's left/right foot forward step on beats 1 and 3, or on beats 2 and 4. The first one is called leading and the latter is called following the beat.

What do people here think ? Which one is a funkier way to dance ?

Peace, out

Stepping out on the snare looks better.

Ditto with them all. Just hit the beats and it'll look good. You don't need to lead or trail, methinks. XD

Some people are like slinkies. Utterly useless, but rather entertaining to watch when pushed down a flight of stairs.

Bboying seal. (Crickets, bellyspin, bellyslide)

I see wutcha sayin! Uhh i think either looks pretty dope...but since da snare tends tuh be louder...it looks more appealin to hit those! But if u get a hella bass heavy song den lead da beat fo sho! Do wutcha like tho...as long as u hittin a beat!

The snare is usually the softer one. Check the basic theory of toprocking guide that's lying around the forum. It's got some really good basics.

If you're not hitting the snares, most people (like 99%) would call that off beat. Snares are the most basic thing to hit, it's possible to rock basslines, guitar riffs, vocals, etc. but the snare will still be the basis for all of those.

definately on the snares.Thats kinda tradition with folk like 'rock steady crew'.So think its whats meant to be done traditionally.looks best aswell.best if the most explosive steps are on the.....thats right, you guessed it.....the mosy explosive part of the music.Listen to the beat when your dancing and replicate it.

Hit the snares. Simple and nice.
Besides that, when you're performing to non BBoys, I think the audiences will easily notice that you are dancing to the beat. You hit on all the technical stuff, some might not be able to make out what you're dancing to.
