Better vid of my tops - 08-09-2006, 03:47 AM

Same thing as last time. Critique, comment. I need it and I'd really appreciate it.

Mine me in the beginning. I was off beat because that first beat is hard to judge when you hit it.

Technically...you're steps are decent but everything looks a little stiff. Loosen up some, it's a dance so use your whole body. Watch plenty of other b-boys like Machine, Mathias, Twixx, most any big name really, to see how they use their whole body.

And yeah, you were missing the beat from time to time but not as bad as most. Keep practicing.

Since that was a sample. I didnt do what I exactly wanted. I could move around the room with spins, turns and using my hips but obviously space is a factor. When I get home I can show yall. I thought I was hitting every beat. Guess that first one threw yall off. Sorry for the song. Since I know its used oh so often here. I appreciate the help tho

Any others?

Use your space to your advantage. In a space that small you should be able to still do most everything.

if you want people to critique your tops, you need to shoot your footage to allow us to see the full body/movement. a lot of people fall into the thinking that it is all the legs/footwork, when it is such a small portion of the whole. don't be one of them. Tops take work, so keep it up.

peace out

Actually, feet work is a big portion of toprocking. You can toprock without moving your arms and still look good. Ive seen it but I do get you. Yes, If I were to show my whole body then it could portray me better toprocking. That wasnt my camera. I to barrowed it but I bought a much better one that will show me whole. I'll make a new video when I get the chance. I just want a basic overview of my tops.

I appreciate all ya'll comments. More are still welcome

D:..... do you really need other people to tell you that it doesnt look quite right..? i mean just look at the pro bboys on youtube toprocking and compare your vid to theres.... 1. feel the music 2. dance
if youre feeling the music and you know how to dance then.... you can toprock

Its was to see if I was decent at toprocking and not looking like a fool that has only one or two types of toprocks. Incase of a battle, I wanna have a chance.

My teacher who's one of the OG's of bboying explained to me the role of toprocking in battle dynamics and i think this could help you to understand how you might want to change your toprocking.

He explained to those in the class that the role of toprocking is to get aggressive and up in people's faces, basically it's intended to intimidate in the battle, to get the upper hand in psyching out your opponent.

That might be what you want to do with your toprocking, get more aggressive and add some hand gestures etc in there to make it look bigger and more aggressive. Granted, you do also need to be stylish and clean with your tops but you gotta get in there and get up in their face, that's why you see koreans getting flack at alot of jams because their toprock is a little lackluster and not really aggressive.

You don't HAVE to be intimidating or aggressive but it always helps to get a bigger and more enthusiastic toprock, it is after all a BATTLE not an exhibition, you're there to beat your opponent by dominating them in all aspects, torpock is one of those.

Peace

A few tips from my own point of view.

First, use more space. And use more aggression, like you would like to fuck off with somebody by showing off. Hand movements, pointing fingers etc. That's what proper toprock is all about. Attitude. With a huge 'A'.

Second, you're missing beats a little. Use construction in your rocking. If a beat is 1-2-3-4, then construct your foot patterns so that you do a similar thing with steps 1 and 3, like standing still or bringing legs front/back, and similar things with steps 2 and 4, like stepping forward, backward, in our out. If you switch between patterns, that is, first step out with beat 2 and 4, and later step out with beat 1 and 3, you look bad, especially if you don't hit the floor between this switch. It can be done, but not without some complementary moves linking these two.

exactly how i would say it...change it up, dont just stay with the same thing over and over becuz otherwise your opponent wouldnt get intimidated. Also practice with becomin one with the beats...make readjustments, say to yourself if that move is good enough or not, remember one simple tweak could change the smoothness of your toprock.
