Opinions? - 05-08-2006, 09:30 PM

Hey. I wasn't sure where else to put this under, but since it's mostly toprock type stuff I'll put it here. I'm still really new to bboyin, but I like dancing/breakin and I like classical. So I felt like breakin to classical. Personally, I don't think it came out half bad, but I'm postin cause I'm curious as to opinions from other people who actually know about it.

I know it sucks, but if you look past that and try to look at what I'm actually trying to do, when it actually kinda goes along. The fact that a lot of it doesn't go along doesn't say anything about breakin to classical cause I can't break entirely well to a normal beat yet either. Lol. So this proves you 'can' break to classical and that if I practice I could get good at it. At one point I'm just doing it along to the feel of the music rather than the rhythm or sounds. But this is basically my first practice, or freestyle ever. Didn't record myself being concious of being 'watched' very much. So with all that in mind.

Firstly, you should break to breakbeats BEFORE you try and adapt it to classical music. (toprock does not come easily... you will need at least a couple of months practice to get a feel for the beats)
Secondly, try for classical songs with more than just a piano.
Thirdly, although I can see breaking work with some classical music with clear-cut beats (such as Adagio for Strings), with most music it will not work because much of classical music places its artistry on the manipulation of the beats to "interpret" them in your own way.
Fourthly, if you really want to break to classical music, search for techno remixes of them, or look for electrical adaptations (e.g. Bond).
Yea, I know. I'm still really new and I don't get much practice in. I guess to see anything good in it, you'd have to of seen how I was doing before Definately an improvement.

But anyway, thanks for the ideas. Some stuff I'd like to dance to doesn't even have a beat most of the time, most classical and metal. I think I'll keep working on the ideas though, I bet it could come out pretty interesting. And again, compared to most here, I just started. Like, 'just' started.

well Im not saying it's all bad. Dude you actually got nice variations down. What you lack is the hand movement and the flow. It looks like you don't like toprocking and that should be fixed first.

And get new music, what you have now, with all respect, stinks.

Lol, thanks. I actually do like toprocking, but like I said I don't practice much, so maybe it just appears that way. Infact, I liked toprocking enough that I forget to try to transition into other things. Which is why I stopped and didn't know what to do to that one part of the song so I just tried a baby freeze. And again when I tried to do a little footwork. I'm not trying to be flashy and when I titled the video "My Awesome Breakdancing" I was being positive about it and a little sarcastic

Ok ok so maybe it's not the best music to break to, but it's how I felt at the moment and I liked the feel of that song. It's called "Believe in Yourself" and I've been going through some really tough issues with myself lately, after my girlfriend dumped me. Realized how badly I abandoned myself and my life, my own confidence, interests, self-esteem. This is when I started to get into bboying stuff, cause it's fun, respectable, expressive, unique to everyone and cool.

So.. Next time I post a video here (after I practice more) I'll post with a 'better' suited song, ok? Lol. But I would still like to adapt breaking to other genre's, to make it fully expressive, at least for myself. Learn more moves and even possibly make a few of my own to fit my expression, the dance and the music all at once. It's just a challenge, you know? So yea. Thanks for the reply. Glad to know I'm doing good with variations, but I'll also keep working on it as well.
