Question How do you look "Light on your feet"? - 05-02-2006, 12:22 AM

like the topic says.. how do you look lighter on your feet? whenever I practice my tops I'm.. disappointed at how much it looks like I'm clunking my feet around, when bboys like born and dyzee look like they're freakin floating on air..

do I need to work out my calves more or something?

Tips or suggestions always welcome

Yo whaddup homie. You're asking the wrong question. It's not the fact that you want to look light on your feet, it's the fact that you want to successfully rock the beat. Looking smooth and light is an outcome of rocking the beat. So you have to focus on it one step at a time. The secret is this..........
Find the beat. It's not hard. Once you've found it, rock strictly to it and to nothing else. Focusing on sub beats distracts you and WILL cause you to lose rhythm. So what you NEED to do is stick to the MAIN beat, then you got it.

well I think to look 'light' you'll need good shoes too. You'll probaply feel light on socks, but you won't feel light on your feet w/o socks.

My advice, buy some nice, light sneakers and practise with them.

I bought some classic converse shoes, the ones made out of canvas.. they're pretty light, there's not much I can find that's really light that I can afford, like puma shoes or something

Ya rock to the beat, it'll help make you not look like a klutz. Like if you actually enjoy the dancing then it isn't so klutz-like because your doing exactly what you want to, and stay on the balls of your foot because then you look like a fairie.

not only rock the beat, try hitting those snares, horns, hit the whole music up. its not all about the beat but as a beginner, hit those beats and anything significant in the song.

The trick to looking light on your feet is to dance on your toes (not on tippy toes) keep your weight on the front half of your foot.

There are some really stupid replies in this thread, did half you guys even read what he typed.

yah, um dancing on your heels is not suggested lol. rockin on the toes is fine, and so is hitting the beat but they didn't answer you're question properly,
so what these guys are saying really ain't gonna help ya look smooth, cause last i checked, whenever you dance hitting the beat is a given..the true key to lookin smooth is consistently practicing it, and LOVING it. if you don't love it you probably won't excel like other bboys in it. but yah, thats a stupid fuckin' answer they gave you, cause i'm sure you are already trying to hit the beat.

Be flexible with the beat if you can understand what i mean and bounce on the ball of your foot(the front part near the toes on your foot). just get lost in the beat. just practice it everywhere. Like when you turn a corner or dodgin someone who tries to slap you. you will get better at it.

This may just be me, but I find I can hit moves alot better when I'm more "into" it. What I mean is that if I'm at my comp and see a freeze and decide to try it out in my room, I prolly won't succeed. If I go to the gym, put some music on in the studio and practice in there (with a couple of people watching from the door), whatever I wasn't able to hit becomes so much easier because I feel more immersed.

I know it's a mentality thing, and prolly not everyone has this problem, but as a beginner it's something I face. I find I don't CARE enough when I practice alone, so I try and practice with others or in public () as much as possible.

I don't know if this helps, but it's just my experience ^_^

yeah, i agree, I usually screw up way more when I'm practicing than when I'm in a circle. Cause when Your in a circle, and theres all those people watchin, it get syou pumped. If your enjoying yourself, its alot harder to mess up, and alot easier to do it right.
