little things to add to a toprock to make it look original? - 04-13-2006, 04:32 AM

i got the cross step and the indian step (i think thats what its called) pretty good, but im trying to add a few just little things of my own to make it unique, i got a kick here and there and a few hops and shuffles to the beat, but iw as wondering if anyones got any ideas on what i can add to make it a little less mainstream

hand motions are one way to make your toprocks look unique...play with your hands and arms and try to come up with your own style.

I've branched out alot into hand motions, at least more than i used to, but if you watch alot of OG's and the top cats, moving your feet is still by far the most important thing.

I was watching Ken Swift, the Prince himself the other day and he rarely uses his hands, but his tops are still damn dope. I'd suggest finding some videos of the top bboys around atm and check out what they're doing. Specifically i'd recommend Machine, Ken Swift, Jeromeski, Twixx and maybe even Junior etc (i know others but my brain is messed atm)

Alot will tell you to just add your own flavour, without realising that if you do, most likely you will end up looking retarded or not coming up with anything at all. But the best way, in my opinion, to learn is to either get involved in the local scene and see what the best cats are doing or get some vids of international bboys and put your own twist on similar moves of theirs.

Peace

One good tip i got was from Alien Ness...if you don't know what to do with your hands, protect your face...sort of like a boxer and move them out when you step.

yeah foot work is the most essential part of toprocks but adding your own hand work can make it look more like your own style.
