how to rock to fast beats... - 04-04-2006, 12:10 AM

Hey guys,

Q for ya, anyone ever have trouble toprockin to a beat faster than your typical hip hop beat? i have decent tops when im dancing to hip hop, but when it changes to say a fast funk beat i lose my flow, cant figure how to bounce right to keep the beat with my steps, if that makes any sense.

Id post a vid but who am i kidding, way to broke to buy anything that will take a vid hahaha

Anyways, any tips much appreciated

1) dont dance to songs too fast. do you break to slow dance songs?
2) you can divide up the beats, so every 2 beats you step out
3) what kind of songs do you mean?
4) you can speed up your toprock

Hah, i usually dance to hip hop when i practice, think jurassic 5 or jedi mind tricks, but at jams or battles i aint pickin the music. As an example of a song that I'd have trouble dancing to, check out the first song in this months mixtape from bboyworld.com, not sure what the name is but its a good example.

But yeah, ive tried just dancing faster (duh) and somethin about the way i learned to rock to hip hop just isnt gellin with the funk beat

I'm gonna see if i can get somethin to make a vid, I'll do one of my tops to both to show what I mean if i can get somethin.

dancin on many different beats is better then always on the same beat cuz as u see u get used to tha beat an can't dance good on otha beats wich sucks when u're battlin or sumthin
u gotta be able to adapt to tha song.

Learn more styles. Certain styles simply will not work for certain songs.

Dance to a wider variety of songs, not just hip-hop. Like I mentioned on another thread...toprock originated from dancing to funk music. If you want good toprock, dance to funk. Once you can dance to funk, you dance to pretty much anything.

Waaaay too many new b-boys are practicing to too much underground hip-hop when none of it is ever played at jams or battles and most b-boys don't dance to it. Meanwhile they don't even know how to dance to "The Mexican" or "Apache" which should be standards for every b-boy.

apache is awsome imo!

Anyway some styles suit fast breaking others don't. Cross stepping is a pretty slow style, so it doesn't suit VERY fast funk songs you sometimes hear @ jams.

Yeah true true, I have been practicing to funk alot lately, hittin my first ever battle next month so the tops gotsta be ready. But yeah, apache is an easy enuff song to dance to, its just the REAL fast funk that throws me off... My tops are pretty aggressive, just havin trouble gettin the right bounce to hit fast fast beats.

Let's not forget "Don't Sweat the Technique" by Eric B and Rakim, a tune often played at jams by old school lovers.

As for rocking fast beats, i'm sure someone has mentioned it, but the only secret to rocking sick beats at 120 beats per second is to practice alot.

I've been rocking to all diff beats for a while now and it's starting to pay off, i can rock any beat nicely nowadays.

Peace

Yeah its funny, I've been a big fan of drum n bass well before I started breakin, and I can rock a dnb beat like nobodies business. Its just somethin about the real fast funk beats, theyre too fast to double step to, and too slow to single step on the beat

Whats a brotha ta do? hahaha

Improvise, take on some new styles, expand your repertoire, you may be applying a style to the beat that is totally unsuited.

Any suggestions for styles that suit fast funk beats? And maybe somewhere that has a clip of someone using that style?

I mean the best advice is to dance to different beats with different speeds. I personally listen to the music before attempting to dance to them just so I feel it before moving my feet.
