It really pisses me off how it's impossible to find a guide on the toprock that is actually done...and to make things worse people in the forums are less than helpful with advice like find your inner floweyness and pray to allah 3 times a day.
Anyway, here's some suggestions to get started with toprock. First off it really helps to have a dvd player with a slow motion button...That said, check out the moves dvd on flares (3rd guy that comes out). It's not just a hop forward & return... What pretty much everyone does is hop forward but AT THE SAME TIME (well slightly after you start hopping forward...otherwise it would just be forward jumping jacks) move your other leg back. Some peeps move the rear leg back and a little behind the forward leg. You can exaggerate the rear leg movement by actually picking it up as well (so like bent and crossing behind a bit). Play around with this variation and it will click a bit better. It also helps to count the beat (1234/1&2&3&4&...will make your movements much more crisp) and to be a bit explosive.
Two other things to keep in mind. If you think about steping so that your body is not facing forward (but one of your shoulders is...) but either angled or fully turned so that your side is facing forward when you hop forward it's much cleaner (and opens up more possibilities to innovate...more ways to move i guess). Also, it is sort of like replacing one foot with the other (one moves just before the other one returns).
Just some ideas since it does seem that everyone does pretty much the same movements (they are not just moving with the music...you'd look like an ass swaying from side to side if that's the advice you took to learn how to bboy....) with slight variations but it's still tough to write it out...
