Question Whats the difference... - 03-30-2004, 07:30 PM

Whats the difference between an uprock and toprock? And if possible, can u show the difference?

Also, when I'm doin a toprock, I feel like I'm doin the same thing over and over. How can I add more of a variety in my toprock (I already know how to kik and back toprock, but what else could I do?)

Hm, in a nutshell...

Toprock - general movement, cross-steps, side-steps, indian steps, replacement tops, etc. Basically the dancing part before you hit your sets.

Uprock - considered separate, but usually implemented in a person's set, it's a more aggressive type step. It usually uses a 1,2,3-4-5 step movement.

You can always just check out the vid section for some clips of both to get a better idea.

I'm just gonna add to what Engyn said.

The toprock is the movements you pull off before you start your set. Usually, while around a crowd of people, you do it to create a circle of people in order to show your stuff, or to call someone out for a battle. Like Engyn said, it's the cross-steps, side-steps, any type of movement using your arms and legs to go to the beat, to warm you up, to get the feel of the beat before you bust your groove. In summary, the toprock is the dance you do while on your feet to feel the beat and bust a move on the floor.

The uprock is a dance in itself. The "Apache Line" is where the uprock is usually performed. Some moves in the toprock are usually performed in the uprock. However, since the uprock is like a battle between two people, without hitting each other of course, you would use your arms and legs as you would in a fight, except you would go to the beat. The two people are in front of each other, and when the music comes on, it's like they would have a one-on-one fight. Like Engyn said, the beat is usually 1 2 3-4-5. Or boom, chic, boom-boom-chick. Or something like that.

So, toprock is the warmup before the breakdown. Uprock is the battle.
