so, Zulu Gremlin calls these " replacement tops"
because basically what you're doing is replacing one foot with the other foot. It creats a really dope effect when you do it right.

First of all, learn how to " charlston"... this is when you keep your knees together and slam one foot in front of the other, then back to the middle, then take the other foot behind the other, then back to the middle

the charlston move is a nice toprock in and of itself, and really easy to get in to a knee drop or sleeper from there to get down in to your footwork

when you keep your knees together like that, it creates good angles in your body- your feet go one way and your body kind of leans naturally in the opposite direction. This is GOOD...try applying this technique wherever you want your dance to look a little more funky.

so, now that you have the basic movement, let's go on to replacement tops.
The leg pattern is the same as the standard cross, jump toprock ( there is already a good guide for that in this section)
only instead of moving sideways when you do the pattern, your body basically stays in one place and your legs move out from under you.

So, cross your right foot in front of your left, using the charlston method of isolating below the knees, and as you swing back to the middle, put your right foot down where your left foot was and shoot the left foot out to where the right foot had tapped.
Repeat left

that's it... standard replacement top

variations - there are many
you can start by driving your swinging leg ( The first one ) BEHIND your standing leg instead of in front, then scooting it back and hopping out side like you did in the first variation

or twist your hips when you open your legs so that the leg shooting out shoots out front, then twist back to face front before you go to the other side


play with how much you STEP, and how much you HOP... the heighth of the swinging leg, the angle at which you do the step...

bein a newbie here and completely new to the game I've found electrons vid clips to be really useful esp. getting started on any toprock.
quick question to electron tho - This 'replacement tops' stuff ...have I got this right:

right leg kicks across left, swings back out to your right, then you shift both feet across left (keeping body fairly central) so your right lands where your left was and the left goes outward ready to kick out and across your right?

you seem to have it down
but the thing about replacement tops is it's more of a TECHNIQUE than a move, you can do it with most of your steps - it just makes doper angles that way
