Newb question... which foot which beat? - 02-05-2004, 04:08 AM

Since there's six steps in the toprock sequence, I was wondering where each foot falls in a bar of music. Is it one foot step for each half beat?

Which would be
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
R l r L r l R l

Where capital letters show a foot stepping forward.

Which would mean that a toprock sequence wouldn't fit evenly into a bar, but it would every three bars.

The other way to do it would be fitting the first three steps of the sequence into the first two beats of the bar, giving it a triplet feel, which feels strange when trying to fit into 4 beat music. How I am I supposed to do it?

There's no set rhythm with it, you can step whenever you want during the beat. People mainly just do the big forward step with each beat, the little steps back and shit can be on beat or not on beat. Nobody has a "1-2-3-4" thing with each step of toprock, so don't think like that.

hit the snare
the standard toprock actually DOES have beats to hit
it's a forward ( or crossing over ) on 1
hop back on 2
cross over other side on 3
hop back on 4

you want to hit the snare when you dance

there are umpteen variations on the standard toprock, depending on how many steps you take to get back, or cross front

all that is up to you
but hit the snare - when you jump back
and hit the beat when you cross forward

She's right, there is a beat for steps. I haven't necessarily paid attention to when I hit, I more or less let the beat manipulate me.

As far as your question is concerned, just listen to what she said. LOL.
