Im guessing those cats were probably just ill-informed and run with that name after hearing/learning it wrong..
Probably in the same way ppl categorise all funk styles, be it waving or tutting etc.. as just simply "popping".
Just to second what trainer basically said:
Uprock also known as Brooklyn rock is actually a dance of its own which was being done b4 breaking, which contributed towards the creation and development of breaking. It's now performed and kinda recognised as an element of breaking...
Uprock = Non contact, Kung-fu/Capoiera looking fighting-5 count dance done by 2 dancers against each other, or a group of many.
Toprock = Footwork done upright (it's a modified version of uprock for breaking)
Downrock = Footwork on the ground
Just to clear up, or further confuse ;p
