Beginners giving beginners tips without understanding what they are saying is probally one of the worst ways to spread KNOWLEDGE.....which is the key to anything in life.

you'll get it, don't get frustrated also though be sure to pick the right music, if your not listening to music that flows and has a good beat and rhythm then you'll always be off

Umm...just my 2 cents.. - 12-15-2003, 10:04 PM

In all honesty..if your trying to impress your "school" your bboyin and dancing for the wrong reasons...whatever floats your boat, but dancing is about expression, not reputation...if you know that beyond anything, then your one hell of a dancer. MY toprock looks kinda weird to other's eyes, but in all honesty truth, I love my top rock because I made it..it flows...it's my own. What others say should just be thrown aside because of the fact that most of them are jealous cuz they cant' do it. Tell um if they think they are so good then "you do it then" and watch them back down...they can't do shit except make themselves look stupid, which is exactly what they are doing in the first place with their bitchin. Just my advice..*and rant* so yeah...thats my 2 cents..

One thing that may help is listening to different styles of music. I find being open minded about music has helped me tremendously with my top rock. And remember dancing is supposed to be fun. If it's not fun, then you're dancing for the wrong reason. Sure you may get frustrated because you can't get something down, but don't stress it. Move on to something else then go back to it.

One life one tribe one love one blood
Too much has been shed its time to rise above
You don’t have to understand it and you dont have to like it
But were much more powerful when we're UNITED
Ignorance fight it Knowledge embrace it
Have sympathy for people who too scared to change shit
Dont talk it just live it
Enjoy life absorb every minute
Quit placing the blame
Put your mind towards change
Hold the torch, light the flame, make a difference
One love one nation lets get uplifted

first of all , there are a lot of white bboys out there - so don't go trying to look black just so you can feel like you're a bboy
a good toprock takes a lot of time- i'm far from theremyself and i've been breaking now for one and a half years. Practice it a lot , in front of a mirror and without a mirror - learn some other rocks as well, indian step , jerks ... get some bboy videos and try to copy some of the steps that you see THEM do. DOn't expect to look like crumbs in two days - but DO keep going over it . Make it punchy , make it crispy . Decide what parts of your toprock are important to you and emphasize that - put a lot of power and effort in to it for a while and then relax your dancing until it's something easy but you still have that crispyness. I think you also might want to watch boxers - i know that helped me to clean up my style- they're really smooth and really fast but also vicious. STudy the way they move.

Aura is right- mix up your music if you haven't already , sometimes there will be a rhythm in a song that just hits you right and all of a sudden you're moving how you want to.

and BTW - we all look stupid when we're learning something new - get used to it , get over it and don't let it stop your practicing

you must have been a bgirl.... because the only moves that you pulled on me were heartbreakers

ah im new here, but i guess ill post my own story. i'm also new to break dancing.
I decided to show the uprock i learned from the video the Bread(bboy tosh) uploaded for us. I did every thing exactly right, i even felt the rythme. by the way , i think it looks awesome. But my friend said
"what the hell is that, it looks retarded"
me : " its some thing you do before you start a a drastic break move"
him : "thats break dancing? wow it looks stupid."
me : "what kind of break dancing have you actually seen?"
him : " uhhh just the thing where they spin around with their legs"
It really pissed me off. kind of suck how people can criticise you when they arent accustomed to the style.
