Pure toprock? -
10-12-2009, 11:16 PM
I realized that I'm not a fan of ground/footwork or power moves. I just love to toprock.
I'm thinking of only practicing my toprock and nothing else, I just love to dance to the beat. Is it alright to do this? Or is it considered offensive to the bboy community? |

Do whatever makes you happy I guess, you're limiting yourself from the other aspects of the dance but it's your choice. I also wouldn't ever try and step into a cypher or especially a battle without doing any footwork.

I have no interest in regular battles. If any battle, It would be a toprock battle

When you fit in with other bboy dancers, footwork and powermoves are a part of the vocabulary of communication. It allows you to know you're in the right place.
Top and uprocking set the tone for the groundwork. I agree to spend more emphasis on the part which directs the path of your stylish approach. In conclusion, just being aware of how one's body moves in relation to itself is key. Reacting to your surroundings is another facet... |

i still say that if youre going to learn just 1 part of breaking... just learn the whole thing... and apparently they do have toprock comps... which just focuses on that aspect of breaking... so if you know your local promoters who throw jams... egg it on them... wink wink...

In order for something to be pure, shouldn't the battle just sort of evolve while having a good time? Planning a competition contaminates the purity of it's (evolution).

it sounds like "uprocking" is more of your forte - google or youtube it, plenty of material and history as well. "Tiny1Love" at Youtube has a couple of good vids. |

People use so many generic burns in battle that aren't spur of the moment nor personally humorous, thus making the battle (unpure).
Usually at a practice spot, I'm not looking for a battle challenge, but if it seems like someone is feeding too much off of me, than I'm tempted to point it out and recognize it. From there we can either trade ideas or competitively take turns. That's sort of what I mean by an evolution, rather than a competition lacking substance or purity of development or history. |

It's actually up to you what you want to be. If you want to be a person that use foot work. Go in foot work battle. Top rock. Go in top rock battles. You'll get tons of respect somehow.
