I...
freestyle.
try something new.
instead of doing the same thing over and over again...i think in my head "Oh, maybe i should try going to the left instead of the right this time".
Stuff like that.
In order to learn new things, you have to try it.
You can't think in your head and be able to do it just like that.
But yeah...
99.98% of the times, practice is usually the answer. xP

I don't think I saw anyone say something about doubling up your steps and you don't always have to make your tops crazy complicated. You can make simple steps look really good if you use different levels and just dance with your whole body.

bro i wholeheartedly agree with you bout the making simple steps looking really good... to me thats the challenge really... i be seeing guys go off putting alot of energy into their movements from being too fast and looking sloppy and not even listening to the music... i like to call guys like that sprinters... haha...!!

another thing i leanred on how to make simple steps look good is FORM...!! gotta have it and it helps you understand your body more like what is your arm doing during this step... is it dead...? is it placed...? i find things like that important because it adds to presentation...

well heres another thing id like to add... i cant remember if i mentioned this in anotehr thread or so... but anyways it's KICK STEPS...!! otherwise known as ball and chain or whatever...

its practically taking all your steps and applying kick steps to every single one... it will give a bouncier feeling... especially if you know how to lean with a step... a dope thing to do with the hands while doing kick steps is disco rolling and pumping out with your hands...

of course you can apply the other concepts i mentioned as well at the same time...

this thread is going good... i appreciate everybody's input... lets keep it going... peace...!!

Lol, so sad. I'm sure you'd get more hits if you made a "Discussion of airchair concepts" thread.

RIP, toprock thread.

oo toprocking. anyways from what i've learned from experience is that the 2 step is the key to every toprock step. it is the most simple, and when used correctly looks the best. changing the speed, length of step, power of the step makes the most simple step look hella nice.

This may only work for me, or maybe everyone else already does this. But when I hit a plateau while practicing "tops" I take off my shoes and practice on carpet. Practicing in the garage or outside is useful for cleaning up your dance and everything but, for me, its severly limiting when trying to expand my tops.
After that I practice with shoes on again in the garage and try to get my new tops as clean as they were on carpet.
I'm no master or anything, actually I've only been bboying for 6 months, however, I have spent a lot of time experimenting with my tops and this has helped me the most in improving.

no....and it does matter..if you understand the "4 corners" concept, then it is the first 2 corners in front.

artoor knows wussup with the 4 corners... as for the 2 step artoor is mentioning... i know it as the "indian step" actually... different vocabulary but i know what hes talking about so its no problem...

the 2 step i know is actually just stepping side to side... its something even wallflowers can do... from a standstill postition with feet together... then step to the side with whateveer leg... then the other leg will follow puttin you into another spot with feet together again...

artoor i believe you just took an uprock workshop crazysmooth right...? heres something i learned from king uprock... but its actually meant for how to groove with the 2 step... and thats the usage of the UPPER BODY...

its practically music theory... but using the 2 step...
take a 1 2 3 4 type of beat...

whole notes - step every 4th beat...
half notes - step every 2nd beat...
quarter notes - step every beat...
sixteenths - double step every beat...

of course when doing this you have to rock or sway your upper body and use it as a metronome for staying on beat... and then youre grooving...!! hahaha...!!

hopefully every one can understand it and like i said... concepts can be used to everything...!! ill drop more if more contribute... peace...!!

fill a hat with different scenarios.....
bank robber
ground is hot
popeye
tall
short
sneaky
jumpy
wobbly
etc......
rotate scenarios every 2 min of tops......
good for character building and developing handstyles.....
