But to answer your question anyways; I believe it has something to do with the feel of dropping. The comfortablility of dropping that way and/or being used to dropping like that.
I always use plain knee drop and spinning knee drop due to the fact that I'm able to control nearly every aspect of it. The speed, the form, the measure, etc. I can't say it's a good thing since it limits the variety of other forms of drops. Why? Because having variety is always good. :P
more than drops which i used as an example i guess it's a definition of my style. i HATE, absolutely HATE anything which breaks the flow of my movement. Like one of my pet peeves is seeing someone top, go down do footwork, and come back up for tops and do fotwork again, and i hate mills cuz unless you're doing a power set they're one of the more harder powermoves to transition into smoothly. same thing applies for my tops, i'll do it so that i flows smoothly like i spin a lot but before i stop and my momentum is dying, my foot will already be stepping out so when i stop, immedeatly it's like this step, then that step, mix in some up rock, go down, footwork or whatever.

I've got 1 question, I hear everywhere its important to be on-beat, I think so myself an off-beat performance is just not as interesting as an on-beat one.But what is on beat?
In a song with several layers of music : 1 basic beat, a tune on top and lyrics on top of that.Generally the tune and lyrics will be the easiest to hear.
Do you follow the beat : only the drum+bass layer in the song?
Do you follow the lyrics ?
Do you follow the tune ?

Is being on-beat strictly following the beat, not dancing to the tune but occasionnaly sticking in something in accordance with the lyrics?
For me being on-beat is kind of a hard concept do grasp because Ive seen bboys dance to tunes, lyrics and beats and often they were great.Although maybe they always kept in rythm with the beat and I didnt notice that...

usually songs don't have their different layers totally different to eachother. they all flow together, which means you can do pretty much whatever you feel like doing in the music (following the lyrics or horns or whatever for a little, then getting back on the snare and shit. basically just playing around with what you feel through the music?)
my advice would be to listen more, dance more, and learn through your own experience. can't really say much more, it's hard for me to explain.

Thats generally what I do, I hate to keep with just one layer of music throughout the song when I toprock.Although I tend to go for tune more then beat because Tune is simply the dominant aspect of the song its what people hear first hand rather then the beat which you really have to listen to get properly.
But It does happen that the tune is slower or faster then the beat which means I will be slowing or accelerating my flow during the song depending on what I feel like dancing to.The song itself will be going at the same rythm though will this make me look off beat?

thats why you have to get to the consistent part of the song... try dancing to the bassline if the song has it... or fall back to the snares... but thats good observation though... it shows you actually listen to the music and is aware of what youre listening to... usually best bet to go bout it is to just stay on it and use your ears to guide you how to dance... and compensate some action on parts where the beats drops by doing a freeze or whatever... then continue when it comes back up...

another dope thing id like to share... i learned this from king uprock himself... he may be a rocker but his saying can be used in all aspects of dance... anyways his saying is this... "a song requires many instruments to be played... but the dancer himself can also be considered an instrument with the song..." some of you might understand it... some might not... but it helped me in a way that the music is not just moving me in a way to dance... but im dancing in a way to move along with the music... hope that helps... peace...!!

Thx for the tips man much appreciated
I think for now ill try to just fall back to the song baseline, I noticed if i vary my dancing to too many layers in the song it can cut my flow and eventually I can loose the flow of the song for 1-2 seconds which is bad.
As for the quote I think we all have our own interpretation.I think that means the dancer is part of the song if he dances to it.He can emphasize the song with good dancing that flows with the music. If the dancer goes off beat hell make the song look bad, because its like an instrument that isnt tuned during a medlody.
I'll post later to give feedback on progress with my toprock.
<3 toprock, that and footwork are to me the best aspects of the dance.

this is what i was told to do when i got into that...develop your style phase? i guess you would call it that. But just close my eyes ( i actually remember getting my eyes taped shut) turning on my favorite playlist (not entirelly bboying but still...) and just doing tops and footwork to it. i know some people who do this at battles, like around the 3rd round once they get used to the stage they'll just close their eyes and rock, and they break out some dope shit...
