so i really want to learn headspins. i can balance on my head (with hands) for as long as i want and i can whip my legs around to get momentum for the spin, but when i go for it, my body doesn't let go and spin. and it just looks like i'm whipping my legs and then nothing. i let go with my hands but i dont know what the problem is. maybe i'm just not commiting or something.

are you tapping?
read Anubis2002's headspin guide first before you try em
its about how much you practice...not how talented you are..

to tell you the truth, most of the guides out there are pretty vague and not that helpful.. sure they might be able to point oyu in the right direction, but at least from what ive experienced, is that most people learn headspins in many different ways in their own way. so , watch all the guides you want, but the most helpful thing to you will be experimenting, and getting feedback from others and most importantly, yourself. goodluck, im just starting to get headspins now and ive been working on them for over a year.

your torso spins first usin your hands, and sinceyour torso cant rotate forever byitself it takes the legs with it. dont force the leg momentum. your torso is what really creates the leg momentum, especially in the bigginning of a headspin. at the bigginning your body should take turns buildin up the momentum. torso, legs, torso, legs, while your buildin momentum, until you get enough speed then you let go and weeeeee!

alright. what rokku said was right. what seems to be happening is your momentum isnt being followed up after the initial spin which is what carries you around in your headspin.
my advice: lock your hips like rokku said. try walking around like you got a bad rash in your crotchal area. keep your legs locked with your hips. and just let your waist and legs whip you. after that you just gotta learn the right time to let go.
after that... tapping. but thats another day.

so you got headstand balace but no headspin balance, my advice, do your headspins slow so your body can get the feel of it and balance of it. then in a month or 2 when your body starts getting used to the move then spin faster. the faster you spin, the harder it is to balance for a rookie headspinner. and dont forget to place your hands on the ground as soon as you feel your about to fall.

power moves come from your hips. your legs just provide the torque (for the most part).
when i see newbies practicing headspins they just kick their legs and so they'll get 1 or 2 really fast spins but then they'll collapse down. and it's frustrating to explain to them to kick from the hip because they just give you a dumb look like they're mentally saying "haha stupid, how do you kick with a hip?!?!" but these are the same people who kick out with their legs on windmills and wonder why it takes them so long to learn.
locking your hips and legs will give you slower spins at first because you need to get used to doing it that way. so take it slow! when i first started i did only half spin rotations before tapping.
