i don't want to say thats a tall and ridiculous order, but it is

"Listening to the music" is the definition of ambiguity. There are so many aspects of it that you can choose to ride; the claps, the bass, the little kinky noises, and even the lyrics. I think what matters in the end is your preference. YOU choose which one(s) you want to explore. We can always say, "you aren't moving with the music", but that doesn't mean the part you decide to move with is wrong.

And again, listening to music comes down to the individual's personality. Personally, i love a tight bass. We can't teach you to "listen to music" because its like teaching someone how to "develop their own style". It's contradictory of what dancing is: self expression.

It pretty much comes down to you..

I guess you can start off by finding an easier song to dance to ...The one you used the other day was kinda hard like everyone said..Use a much slower song and try hitting the bass and claps..When you get used to doing that, you can add some flavor to it and make it your own ..

Basically speaking, if u dont no how good ur musicality is, or even just what musicality is to begin with (and chippa has said numerous times, that it is NOT knowing a song), u should focus on the claps only.

now how to listen to the music, some things i usually concentrate on (and this is probably why ppl always say i think too much when i dance):

1. The clap itself
How loud is it? Obviously, the louder the clap, the harder u should hit to emphasise the loud sound, u wouldnt wanna do a piss-weak hit on a huge blow-up).
How often does it repeat?
Is the clap the central part of the song, or does it seem to have a secondary priority in comparison to other parts of the music? Hence, ur dancing should readjust itself to suit the other parts of the music.

2. The genre/feeling of the music itself: Now to ask urself, what styles u should do in the music. Is the music pure funk, is it glitchy type of music, is it plain hip hop? I wont tell u which styles u should associate with which music since thats ur dance.

3. Lyrically, what does the music tell u? What mood is the song in? Hence ur dancing should be, for example, much softer to love songs, and faster and more erratic in hard techno.

If you don't want to do that... then look this stuff up, and get an understanding of all this...

Notes (and the various lengths)
Rhythm
Melody
Harmony
(Be able to distinguish those last two when you are listening to something)

EVERYONE here should have a basic understanding of these things. These are the foundations of ALL music. If you understand them, it makes listening to the music easier. It also improves your understanding of the STRUCTURE of a song and will help your ability to interpret the sounds you hear.

There is a difference between HEARING the music, and LISTENING to it.

Hearing - You know it's there, you can hear it.

Listening - You know it's there, You're concentrating it. You being to understand its patterns and rythms.

I'm sure he's got all the dudes and chicks jockin him at his high school, inflating his ego, stroking ALMOST as much as he strokes his wang while his mom's making jello in the kitchen...

But it doesn't matter, cuz he can find the beat.

But he can't find the bass. The snare, the horns, the keyboard, the strings, the piano, the lyrics, the cowbell.
He can't find the funk.
Because he feels "it isn't that serious."
