(Like say in chromeo's music, how they have the little breaks around every 8 measures). That's predictable. That's not musicality. If you're just hittin the claps and riding the straight forward beat (1234...)

Musicality has to do with listening to the MUSIC. Not the beats. And then interpreting the music into a rhythm that is displayed through your body.

Music, and leading into musicality, is the horns, the guitar, the piano, the tones of the vocals... etc. It's being able to hear all of those at one time and selecting which one you want to move to. Then it's also using combinations of those rhythms to create new rhythms and really a new "body music" to express the visual movement of the song. (It's easy to say "how does a song move?" but its another to put it into movement). That's why I say (and I recently found out Rennie Harris uses a similar analogy) that when you are popping (or doing hip-hop/house/freestyle, etc) then its like you're a jazz musician, you have freedom to do whatever you want within the limitations of the music, but those limitations are few, so you can create a whole new part of the song with your body and your dance movements.

If anyone is confused by this, please ask questions. I want y'all to get what I'm talking about.

PS- The stuff chromeo does... that was earlier called the "kinky sounds..." haha
I already did touch on musicality, no one seems to have any words about this either.

Did I finally shut everyone up? haha.

Yea I read that..But I wanna know more about musicality..Because to me, musicality = how you interpret the music.. That's not enough..I know there's more to it so please school me on musicality!

Seriously... Drareg... there's no more for me to say.

What you need to do is start EXPLORING the music you are dancing to, and exploring your dance movements.
How you interpret the music is strictly personal and is something you need to discover for yourself. It's like you asking me "Invent, who am I? What defines me?" I would NEVER answer that because that's for you to figure out on your own and then show to the world.

Listen to the music, start moving WITH it, not TO it...
Then you'll discover musicality.

Oh, I mean I got that down.. I just thought that there was more to learn.. TY

Edit:

Oh wow..I think I just got over that "slump" that I've been in..After I read "Listen to the music. Move with it, not to it." .. Recently, I've been like "Yeah yeah whatever cool. I'm doing it blah blah" with my dancing and haven't been making progress.. But I just stopped and really listened to the music and had good results! I had one of those "in the zone" moments LOL.. Ok thanks.. Time to practice more!

I find that i tend to hit on the Bass beats and claps. Would that be okay ?
So Boom Clap Clap Boom Clap Clap
Hit Hit Hit Hit Hit Hit

But if the music is real fast, then i would hit only on the claps

Damn, Invent has been dropping serious knowledge.
I've been trying to work on my musicality for a while along with foundations, but I'd only start getting "musicality" when I just zone out and let the music move me. I just can't seem to control it, yet. (wtf this sounds like some whack ass cartoon situation)

But to iRespect and your hitting comment, don't hit on every single beat you hear. This video of wiggles spitting out mad knowledge might clarify somethings for you. (It sure did for me)

This whole post sounds like I'm talking out of my ass, maybe because it's also 3am and I'm feeling insomnia hitting me. *shrug*

Drareg- is that not interpreting the music? (just to clarify one question from earlier...)

It is..But I asked you to talk more about it because I thought that there was more to musicality than just "interpreting the music".. I guess not.. :O

What more do you want me to talk about?

Do you have any specific questions?

Why don't you post up a video displaying your musicality and then maybe we can start going from there.... otherwise, I already boiled down musicality to its most simple essences. Why would you want things more complicated? You want me to discuss rhythms, timing, and possibly what goes through MY head when I get down?

Maybe I'll just do that when I get home...
