The REAL origins of popping. The proof is in the timeline, not a dessert... - 09-14-2008, 02:46 AM

I know some of you have seen the debates and heard about the propaganda, brainwashing and hate being slung around but here's the truth:

Boogaloo Sam DID NOT create popping.

He might not have even created boogaloo.

First a few questions: People say that Sam created popping and electric boogaloo. Does that mean he also created the robot? Did he really create the idea of a "hit" or a "pop"?

No... First of all we know that doing the robot began in the late 1960's. As did the boogalo, the jerk and the popcorn. That dance was based off of this song:

These dances were VERY popular not only around the country but more importantly in the BAY AREA. Because of heavy black panther activity in the late 60's in Oakland, ROTC drills (and contests involving these military based steps) flourished, and around 70-72 gave rise to STRUTTING.
There were groups back then gettin down on the strutting tip, and they started adding robot and elements of the popcorn (in other words THE HIT). Such groups were "Granny and the Robotroids" and the Black Resurgents. They had done some TV performances around this time... and later in '76 performed on the gong show.... note... ORIGINALLY the EB's claimed Sam invented popping and boog in '78).

So... let's jump back to around 70-72.
Fresno California. The West Coast Relays were HUGE. It was a college track meet event, but there were other things connected to it. Like a dance competition... HMMM
There was a guy who won in 71 or 72 (his name escapes me atm.. but I know someone with the actual FOOTAGE) but his style was BASICALLY boogaloo rolls.

Now: Can we imagine a teenage Boogaloo Sam seein this guy, and 4,5,6 years later starting to create his own dance based off of what he saw that day?

Now an interesting fact that needs to be looked at is this:
When I first started popping 6 years ago, the year given by the EB's of WHEN SAM CREATED POPPING AND BOOGALOO

WAS 1978.

Three years later, as bay area OGs started to resurface:

1977

A year after, when people started callin that history bluff:

1976

And now??? they say

1975... but he started the EB's in '76 or '77.

Why the change in years??? especially when they were so certain for so many years that he started it in 1978???

BTW- Any of you in the bay area wanna talk to a cat that knows the real full history in detail (ive forgotten A LOT over the years)
Come to Mighty 4 and look for a guy named MOONCRICKET.
He has been making a documentary on the true histories of bboying and popping for the last 15 years. If anyone is qualified to speak on the history its him. (And trust... bboying didn't start with rocksteady... it was all about who was mainstream and had the exposure... especially when these dances "died out" and no one was there to challenge the history).

MikeyIce... I hope your head hasn't exploded yet.

WORD UP!
dang, there was controversy on the b-boy tip as well when there were some hot words from TRAC 2 not long ago. the information war is just not good for the scene! it takes an objective, discerning, and critical mind to see what's real.

to me, the historical/sociological perspective that Invent presents here is more convincing and objective because it accounts for the cultural/political context from which the dance was probably born. fortunately, that can be more trustworthy or affirmative than a given group of OGs; they're people too!

No Mikey...
it's called research.
If you noticed I said I started dancing 6 years ago.

I spent a good 2 or 3 years talking to people that no one would listen to... I found people that stay away from the scene...(like Granny) I shared my true thoughts and feelings and they shared their histories with me.

Pudding is sweet... it's sugar coated. (For those of you who are foreigners... in english there a saying that if something is sugar coated, then that means there's lies on top of it to make it sound good... because sugar can make anything taste good and sweet... even poop... lol)

Truth is usually harsh, and bitter...

The truth IS there for everyone. They just need to LOOK at the facts and weigh the history. You can believe if you want Mikey, that the EB's created popping... just as people believe the world will end in 2012. But history, truth, and common sense doesn't lie. People do.

PS-

None of the ideas that come from popping are original...
boppin andre got his influence for bopping from this scene from chitty chitty bang bang:

HOLY CRAP SHE'S DOING THE ROBOT!!! Complete with dime stops...
You gonna try to tell me Boogaloo Sam invented that??? Or one of the EBs???

This is a white lady in a movie from 1968...
SHE WAS BOTTING!!!

Nothing is new under the sun. It all came from somewhere...

nice one invent

i took a sugapop workshop about 2 weeks ago..and asked some questions not really regarding the history..i didnt wanna be too confrontational. although i might know his answer... but the rest of the students have to know.. i mean whether or not he is right...they need to think for themselves too...otherwise they just gonna believe whatever someone says..if they have great charismatic abilities like suga

i questioned him though when he said popping came from this area..and i asked him what about the areas around it in LA (like the bay area)

but he reckons they were just doing a waterdowned version of water sam was doing

the best thing is to research..the history is important...to create a new future..we need to understand the past right?

Well...
So what if they were doing a watered down version...

Think about that statement...

Does that give Sam the right to lay claim to the style as his if people were doing "watered down versions" before him?

That means I can simply say that "I do a more advanced style of popping than they did in the 70's and 80's... I invented popping."

Research and common sense...

This has gone round and round on Wigz... WCP is practically a collection of popping realists...
It's double info there...

But I dont wanna stir trouble on Wigz... I have too much respect for the man... he respects me too, I have no desire to bring even MORE drama over there.
