For All who know how to do a Front Handspring - 07-25-2008, 08:58 PM

Yeah, wasn't sure if this was the right section or not, but oh well

I've been trying to do a front handspring, but everytime i flip over, I land hard on my butt/back/feet. Normally landing on feet is good, but i land on it so my back is already on the floor, and my feet kinda just smash flat into the ground.

I heard you have to "push off with your shoulders" when you are just over the handstand, but I dont understand how you can "push" when your arms are already extended. HELP

If you aren't landing on your feet normally, you are either doing one or a combination of the following things incorrectly:

Pushing the ground when you're half way through the move.

or

Not getting enough leg momentum to carry your body through the rest of the handspring.

When I say "pushing on the ground" I mean having your elbows flexed enough for you to get an extension off for the handspring. If you don't get what I mean, try this: Stand up, and then fall into a push up with your arms fully extended. Try it a second time, but this time have your elbows bent at a 90 degree angle to help cushion the fall.
Granted these are different movements (push up and handspring) but the general concept stays the same - allowing your elbows (and essentially your whole shoulder carriage) to absorb and then provide force for you to work off of.

I'm kind of pressed for time, but I'm sure someone else can fill you in by what I mean when I said "not enough momentum of the legs/hip".

Hope this helps.

Wow, I actually found a guide for a poledancing move called front handspring. But anyway, here's a high quality guide.

Don't bend your arms.
Keep your arms STRAIGHT.
Basically when you reach a handstand, KICK your legs OVER so you can land.

Doing a headflip can help because kicking your legs is the same concept.
Except if you fail in a headflip, all you really do is roll, so its less dangerous than a Front Handspring.

It could be your flexibility. Stretch your quads, but hamtricgs calfs and shoulders, if your landing on your butt hard it means youre not getting enough arch. Try stretching in a bridge 10 times
video tape yourself to see how close you can get you feet to your hands. if your landing like the crab walk you definetely need more stretching.

other than that.

find a focus point on the floor when you're in the handstand point and when you're about to fall back stay looking at that point. When you fall back you should try to get your feet as close to your arms/hed as you can it will make it 99 percent easier to stand back up from your bridge, making it a front handspring.

message me if you need help
i was in gymnastics for over 5 years. but i quit that a whiiile ago, i still know a lot of stuff though.
