guide to a betta breaker - 09-18-2003, 10:50 PM

first start out with the basics(toprock, six step, bronco, etc)
alway stetch first to be hyped up to break
then start with the power moves( 1990,2000 etc)

here are a lot of breaking move down here

1 Handed Cartwheel

1) thsi is done just like a regular cartwheel except with on hand.
2) You may have seen Sisqo do this move in the Thong Song (Sometimes it helps to get a running start).
3) You need to be able to ballance on you hand but for only like a second.
4) If you keep your ligs and body straight the moove looks really phat.

180 Flip

This move is basically a backflip with a twist in it. To do this move you must first be able to do a regular backflip pretty well. First try learning it on a mattress.

- First of you should have some big room to start of from, then when you feel right start running forward.
- After gaining momentum jump into the air. When you jump swing your hands towards your back and kick upwards with your right leg. You should try to do a backflip. If you've ever seen someone do a running backflip that's what the start of the flip should look like. (remember this is a backflip not a front flip)
- By this time your feet should be in the air and your head about 4 feet of the floor. At this time you should try to force your body to slightly twist.
- If you did it right you should land the land on your left foot if you're a righty or on your right foot if you're a lefty it depends on which way u twisted. At first your not gonna get enough height so you're gonna need your hands to keep you from falling.
- At the end you must be facing the opposite direction from when u started the flip.

You can also use this move to go into footwork. Also remember not to bring your legs to your chest cuz then it doesn't look as tight. After you master this move u could try a 360 backflip which is like this but you don't run into and when u twist you do a full 360 so you face the position from where u jumped from. I hope this long description helps you all and remember if you cant do something on your first try keep trying and you will eventually get it.

1990

First you find out which hand you want to spin on, your left hand or your right hand (usually the stronger hand). Now you are ready to begin.

Right hand: You start in a standing position. Then you cross your left leg over your right leg. Now you want to try doing a cartwheel with putting your left hand down first then your right. When you are doing this you want to kick up with your right leg then your left (this may feel akward at first but if you do this correctly it makes it much easier). Instead of doing a complete cartwheel, you want to stop half way and balance on your right hand. If you crossed your legs correctly you should be ready to start spinning. just push off with your left and bring your legs together. You sould spin in the clock-wise direction and lead with your head. The TRICK to spinning is that you have to spin on the correct part of your hand or else you will not spin at all. You want to spin on the lower part of your palm, there is kind of a hard bone there, and you also want to lift up you fingers so that they do not cause friction. If you have trouble lifting up you fingers it helps to bend your elbow a little bit. It may be hard to do at first but the better your body is balanced over your right hand the longer you will spin.

Left hand: You start in a standing position. Then you cross your right leg over your left leg. Now you want to try doing a cartwheel with putting your right hand down first then your left. When you are doing this you want to kick up with your left leg then your right (this may feel akward at first but if you do this correctly it makes it much easier). Instead of doing a complete cartwheel, you want to stop half way and balance on your left hand. If you crossed your legs correctly you should be ready to start spinning. just push off with your right and bring your legs together. You sould spin in the counter clock-wise direction and lead with your head. It may be hard to do at first but the better your body is balanced over your left hand the longer you will spin.

2 Step

Check out the Silly Step which is basically the same move.

The two-step is done in many different ways, some of which will probably be explained below, but the one that is a cool start goes like this:

Start out in a push up position and do the first step in a six step, lift your right hand and put your left foot where your hand used to be. Instead of stopping her, turn yourself in a crab soccer position, like in the third step of the six step. Now throw out your right leg and do a chain and ball, a helicopter or a coffee grinder (depends where u from). Catch your left ankle in the air on your way around and twist and untwist it for style points. When u land u should be in the starting position. It helps if you're flexible when u do the chain and ball. This is very good for getting momentum for other moves.

2000

First of all before you can do this you must be able to do a 1990. You have to know which hand you wanna spin on usually the stronger one.
Ok now before actually trying this move first practice by doing a regular handstand and lift up the hand that you don't spin on and place it over your spinning hand palm over palm, and try to balance like that for a few seconds, the longer you can stay up the better and practice alot. Now u are ready to begin first start out by going into your 90 and once you are in the air you lift up your nonspinning hand and u start to spin place your free palm on top of yourspinning hand and try to pull of some spins..this move is much easier than a 1990 but takes a week or two to get one solid rotation down so it shouldn't be too much..just keek trying

-Tips you don't spin on your fingers you spin on the bottom of your palm
-You might wanna use a bandana or something under your hand when trying this for the first time when you start to get better take it off

2001

Spin in the handstand on the back of one of your hands.

3 Leaf Clover

1) Do a handstand.
2) Get 1 hand off the ground so that you are balancing on one hand.
3) Split your legs and land back on your feet.
4) It takes only about 3 seconds to do the move.

3 Man Helicopter

[1] Get a big tough guy and 2 medium build or skinny guys and have 1 guy get on the big guys shoulders and have the other littler guy grab the 1st skinny guys feet.

[2] Have the big guy spin to his right and the skinny guy start runnin
helluva fast in the same direction.

[3] Now have the guy on the shoulders lean back and the other skinny guy lift his feet up.

[4] Keep spinning till you kick an innocent bystander or you hear the guy on the shoulders screaming from havin his nuts pushed into the big guys head.

3 Step (Counter Clockwise)

Step 1 - From crab position (on all fours with back to floor and legs bent) extend left leg forwards.

Step 2 - Lift left hand up and begin to reach it over to your right while at the same time switching your legs (extend right and pull in left simultaneously).

Step 3 - Put left hand down near your right. All your weight transfers to your arms as you sweep your right leg around under your left 180°. Both legs will lift off the ground and move together counter-clockwise. Your right leg will contract and your left extend during this part so you land in the position you end step 1 in. You will now be facing the opposite direction and be ready to continue three stepping.

4 Step

Okay bboys and bgirls, for learning four step, you should first learn to do six step relatively well. For counter-clockwise four-steps, start from the push-up position (the way you would start a six-step). (Basically this part is the six-step)

1. Lift your right arm, and move your left leg through so it's more or less where your right hand just was.

2. Move your right leg so that your right foot is tucked behind the left knee.

3. Move your left foot around to your left side so your legs are uncrossed. At the same time switch your hands.

4. Extend your right leg and sweep it around hard in a counter-clockwise arc (like a helicopter), but instead of stopping there like in the six-step, or swinging it and jumping with your left foot like in the helicopter, swing your right leg hard and let it "carry" your left leg back around your body to step one and continue.

That's it, hope I helped. If you want go clockwise, just reverse all the lefts and rights.

6-Step (also called DownRock):

This is the basis of bboyin. Its the thing people do when they first hit the floor. It looks like yer sitting there with your legs flying around you.

Like the name says, it has six steps.

These instructions are for doing the move counter-clockwise, as are most moves.

To start, get in the position like you would to do a push up, but with your feet spread about 2 or so feet apart.

Step 1: Lift your right hand, and move your left where your hand used to be.

Step 2: Move your right leg forward so your knees are close, but keep your left leg where it is.

Step 3: Pull your left leg in as your right leg stays where it is.

Step 4: Swing your right leg in a WIDE arc kinda like how peeps do that coffee grinder thing Switch hands, so now you're right hand is down, left hand up. Keep your right leg swinging around.

Step 5: Your right leg swings around and wraps around your left. You have your face down and both hands on the floor. Extend your left leg first, then your right leg. This is important to making it look right.

Step 6: Now you're in the starting position, continue with step 1

That's how the 6-step is done. You'll see it often referred to in other moves such as mini flare, swipes, and other stuff.

You will start most moves from the 6-step. All the power moves that you do on the ground (except flares) can only be started from 6-step and look good.

Some Moves from 6-step:
Mini Flares/Baby Flares-This is kind of a half flare. All you do is swing both feet up in front of you like a flare, on step 2. Lots of people dont know how this ends up, but its simple. Both feet go back around you and you end up in step 4/5. Windmills can be put in on step 2

Go to Crickets/Jackhammers/other similar moves from step 5.

Most other moves, you can figure out where it can fit just cuz it feels comfortable that way. Good luck and practice a lot

6-Step Tips

Just a few points that have helped me to greatly improve my footwork over the past months (these are not hard and fast rules, but they will help you to notice the difference in appearance of various styles):

1. keep you hips under your center of gravity (i.e. your belly button). this means you will have to keep one foot underneath you at most times by alternating)

2. if your hips are slightly elevated (with your center of gravity still over your feet), your movement will be faster. this means that you should try to support your self on the upper-portion of your palm (where your callouses are), or on your finger-tips (be careful of your thumbs). you can develop good footwork on flat palms, but it's harder.

3. your supporting foot (under your hips) should, for all practical purposes, almost never be on its heel. stay on the ball of the foot.

4. beware of excessive arm-flailing unless its part of your style.

5. try to keep a relaxed face (ex: easy roc). this is just a personal pet-peeve, but it can make a difference.

6. don't just go for speed. change the tempo, and don't forget that it's possible to return to toprock briefly and then reenter footwork.

7. when you're learning, force yourself to freeze after every three (or whatever) revolutions of your six-step. good freezes are oftentimes what separate the real breakers from the wanna-bes who copy you and also grant you time to think of your next move.

Hope this helps, and work the style. Make sure that your "break DANCE" doesn't turn into a routine a gymnast with no rhythm could imitate. there are, of course, some damn good gymnasts with rhythm, so watch the insults .

Lastly, learn to love practice as must as performing. Breaking is a labor of love, and make sure your motives match that mentality.

Aerial Cartwheel

an aerial is just a cartwheel done with no hands so you should learn how to do a very smooth and fast cartwheel before attempting an aerial. many people claim that you should learn the one handed cartwheel also, but the aerial and the one handed cartwheel are totally different.

1) you have to learn how to do a cartwheel: first, lift your left leg and raise your arms up in a ready position. Bend downwards and place your left foot on the ground. Now bend down more and place your left palm down in front of your left foot. Now raise your right leg which should be in back of you into the air. After that put your right palm down in a line with your left palm and left foot and finally raise your left leg and bring it above you. As your left leg goes up, your right leg should be landed or about to land. The farther apart your legs are the better it will look. While landing your left leg, bring your arms up also. Your final position should face opposite the direction to as you started.

2) Keep practicing your cartwheel until it is very smooth and you can land it very lightly. After a while if you do it extremely fast you should feel a popping up movement when u land. Always try to compact your cartwheel also. In order to do an aerial, your cartwheel has to be very compact and cant be very wide. As you master your cartwheel, try kicking inwards at the end when you bring your legs up. When you feel a popping movement, you can try the aerial.

3) The aerial is jus a cartwheel except your hands aren't supporting you, momentum is. When you first try you should get a running start, but after a while u can do standing aerials which jus look so beautiful. After a short run jump onto the floor, left leg outward and with your left leg, jump straight upwards while bending sideways and lifting your right leg. You should be in midair now and bring the left leg over also. You should try to land lightly and inward, not outwards. The two most important secrets of doing an aerial is remembering to keep it compact, not wide and that the jump is upwards not forward.

Air Swipe

Start from the top do a half flare and kick your left high in the air while your right should through too u should land on your left with your right up do more by twisting your arms fast towards the foot u have up.

Air Turtles

Arms must be straight, hands placed shoulder width apart, legs must be bent and curled behind you ! Try to walk in circles to really make it look better !

Airborne

It's like a somersault with a nip-up of kick-up to end it.
you have to be able to do a kick-up well to do this.

ok, you stand with your legs about 1.5 shoulder widths apart and put your left hand flat on the floor infront of you, now lean over roll forwards.

keep your left arm straight, and as you're rolling over pull your right arm against your chest. By this point all your weight should be on your right shoulder, and your feet should lift off the ground.

Your arms should be beside your head on the floor , like your going to do a kick-up. The key to this is, is that your legs dont touch the ground. When your legs follow your body after you've rolled over, they crunch up against your chest like a kick-up. Then you use almost all arm power to push yourself up onto your feet, dont kick your feet out like you do a kick-up, just use your arms.

When you've got it, it should look like a somersault to the right and then you pop up off the ground as soon as you roll over.

Airplanes

windmills with your arms straight spread out to the sides as high as you can get them.

Airtrack

Alight here are the instructions for a move called the airtrack (which in my opinion is one of the hardest and most spectacular moves in breakdancing!)

to perform the airtrack it's best that you can perform multiple flares and windmills with ease...the reason you need to be able to do this is because an airtrack is basically a windmill in midair and you will need the flare to perform before the airtrack to gain momentum...(its almost impossible to do the airtrack by itself...most of the time you will want to perform a flare~airtrack combo)

this is for counter clockwise flares and airtracks

start off by doing half of a flare...when you do this you should be in the back part of the flare with you hands on the ground in front of you and your legs spread apart behind you...now kick your right leg up and to your left behind you in a circular motion...at the same time look to your right (very important!)...right after you look to your right kick your left foot under your right foot (like doing a windmill except your body is off the ground)...when you twist too far to keep your hands on
the ground swing your right hand around behind you...as soon as you lift your right hand give a very hard kick with your right leg going up and left and your left leg going under it (just like before...picture the motion for a windmill)...a millisecond after you let go of the ground with your right hand let go with your left hand (you have to make sure that it is a millisecond after you let go with your
right hand...if you let go with both hands at once you will just fall to the ground)...when you lift your left hand you should now be in the air with your back facing the ground and your legs open like you were doing a windmill...as soon as you see the ground (that's why I told you it was important to look to your right...so you can see the ground when you come back over) put your right hand down...then put your left hand down...you should now be in the position that you started the move
in...from here you can go into windmills or another flare...

the most important thing when you do this move is to make sure that you stay about 45 degrees to the ground...if you go too high up you will land on your head instead of hand and if you go too low you will land on your back or your stomach...another tip is to make sure that you keep you legs open...if you close your legs you will spin more than you want to and land on your back...

some variations to this move:
double airtrack- an airtrack where instead of keeping your legs open you close them and spin around twice before catching your self on your hands.

other variations- an airtrack is basically just a windmill in the air so any variations on a windmill can probably be used for an airtrack (like nutcrackers, genies, sumos etc. etc.) just make sure you land on your hands in the end or you could hurt your self pretty bad...

damn well I know this description is long but I hope I helped some of you out there learn this move...and I know it sounds confusing but its not too confusing once you try it...just be warned that this move is VERY hard and it will take you at LEAST 2 months to learn it...if you don't get it the first few times you try it don't get frustrated just try it again...you'll get the hang of it sooner than you know it...

Angels

Windmills holding your belt.

Apple Jax

Apple Jax r some really ill moves that have about 4 different variations. They r very easy, but need some practice, and it is almost impossible to hurt yourself doing them. They can also be mixed in with your footwork.

Two-Handed 1-Foot AppleJax:
1) U start in a crouching position, on your toes hands about 3 inches off the ground.
2) Then u kick back as hard as u can with (left or right foot) and simultaneously put your fingertips on the floor beside your hips. U wanna try to hit the top of your thighs against your chest.
3) As u kick your feet back down (as hard as u can) bring ur chest forward and land back like u started in step 1.

Two-Handed 2-Foot AppleJax: Kinda Like A V-Kick
1) Start in crouch
2) Jump a little bit back with both feet and simultaneously put your fingertips on the floor. (go back as much as u can, don't be afraid because u will have your hands to catch u)
3) Right after the top of your thighs hit your chest, simultaneously kick them forward and lean your chest forward so u r back to step 1.

One-Handed 1-foot AppleJax:
1) Start in a crouch
2) Kick back with your left or right leg and use only your left or right hand (the same one u kicked with) to pun on the floor.
3) As u kick forward, use the hand that's not on da ground and swing it forward to help u back onto your feet.

One-Handed 2-foot AppleJax:
1) Start in a crouch
2) Jump back a little and kick with both feet and try to hit them against your chest. (U have to lean on the side of which arm u r using. Example: if u use your right arm, lean to your right.)
3) Do like a 1-handed "suck-it" motion with your free hand for style.
4) As u kick your feet back forward, push forward wit your arms to help u back up into a crouching position.

Baby Suicide

AKA Front Handspring Suicide

its pretty easy, you should be able to do a regular suicide first.

1. start in a handstand, and do a front handspring.
2. but instead of landing on you feet, land flat on your back with your hands behind you like in a kip-up.
3. then there are plenty of things to do, do a backspin, or a freeze, or do a kip-up.

be careful and practice a regular front handspring first.

Baby Swipes

(going to the right)

[1] Put your left foot up while u are in a bridge like position and jump with your right foot

[2] Throw your left under your right u should do a mini twist.

Baby Windmills

Baby windmills - windmills with legs curled up and crossed at the ankles. No hands used.

Try to remain in the fetus position. As soon your rollin on your back, kick your legs outwards, and at the same time shrug your shoulders under in the momentum your in, to get u to roll over and onto your back once again. Repeat this process and remember to flow with the momentum, also it helps to stay up high on your shoulders and rollin on your forehead.

Back Handspring

Start with a back walk over. Basically you just fall backwards and land in a bridge position and then your legs follow (keep them as straight as possible). This is your hand placement and no you don't have to be able to a backflip because I can't do one either. After you can do the backwalk over just jump into it and this is a back hand spring. Master this first before trying to land in the same spot. When you get a regular back hand spring down you can start under cutting it so that your hands will land in the same spot as your feet were. To do this you have to jump forward and back at the same time. This sounds weird and also feels weird but you'll get used to it. You have to throw your hips forward as you jump into your back hand spring and eventually you'll be landing in the same spot. Hope this is clear. Be careful and try it on as soft as a surface as possible at first.

Back Toss

The back toss is a move u can do when u and another breaker r in the circle and u want to work together.

1) U and your partner face each other.
2) Have your partner throw a right punch at u. U then grab his arm and hook yours around it. Turn so your back r against each other and lock arms/elbows.
3) Now bend forward and pull the other guy over u, he has to jump or else u will be doin a lot more work than u have to. The height the other guy gets will depend on how high he jumps, and how hard u pull him. He should land on his feet in front of u.

This move will probably hurt your arms and back the first couple times u do it but keep practicing and it won't.

Back Walkover

back walkover is similar to valdez but this move is require you more flexible.
stand up, then lean back into a bridge position. you try to throw your legs over your head until you are standing up.

Backflip

In order to do back flip you need a lot of momentum, so the first thing you need to learn right now is B A C K T U C K!

Standing up, straight your body and your hands up in the air (this is how you get momentum if your hands in the front of your face and do backflip you will be fall down on your knee!)

Swinging up your hands down to your back , and imagine you about to sit on the CHAIR! and then SWING up your hands up in the air, try to imagine hit your knees UP to your face.

In order land on your feet you have to tuck your knees to your chest, that's how you get high , cuz you ball your body AND YOU'LL landing down on your feet.

Backside 44

1) Stand facing a partner.
2) Then both of you get in the position of a backflip.
3) Then do a backflip both of you and smack feet together.

Backspin

This is a good move to start with if you're a beginner.

[1] Sit on the floor with your left leg bent and your right leg back in a 90 degree
angle, support your body with your left hand.

[2] Bring your right leg around in a wide circular motion. At the same time move
from a sitting position and roll in to a ball with your balance on the top of your
back.

[3] Pull your legs in fast and keep your body in a tight ball. The less of your back
touching the floor, the longer you'll spin.

[4] End with a Pop Out by moving to your feet without using your hands.

Backward Pushover

crouch, lean backward, roll onto your back, put your hands near your ears (your legs shoud be like in kip up - tucked), kick your body up pretty straight and land over your head or face (head on the ground, not lifted in the air), so that first comes down your chest, then your belly and then your feet (move your hands close to your hips to go slowly).

Backward Worm

It starts like The Original Worm but instead of lifting your legs u lift your shoulders up until it reaches your hips then u use your legs to hop up, use your arms to move backwards and your chest goes down before your legs.

U can start this by doing from a dolphin dive it's kinda like a falling handstand where u slowly move down towards your chest then to your stomach then u do the backwards worm.

Barrel Windmills

Start out by doing a front side body flare, or after the 4th step put your left elbow in your gut, and put your left palm on the floor with you fingers pointing to your feet. Put your right arm flat on the floor, and also the right side of your face on the ground.

Now flare out your legs behind you and staying in that position, turn your whole body to your right with your left hand, then swing your right leg up, and your left leg under.

Now flip over to your back and cross your arms across you chest, or stick them out like your making a basket with your arms. If you have enough momentum do the same as a windmill, but roll onto your chest without planting your elbow in your gut, leave them where they are, and continue linking them.

This move is tough on your hands and takes an extreme amount of momentum, try a 2-step into it. You have to be able to do windmills easy to do this.

Bellymill

Instead of turning over your hands or head you turn over your belly.

Bite (to bite)

To copy somone's style and moves. Very desrespectful.

Body Flare

To do a body flare, you should be able to hold a hangglide position
pretty well. If you want to do it clockwise, use your right elbow as
your elbow in the middle part of your stomach, counter clockwise use
your left hand. I'm gonna explain how to do it counter-clockwise.
Put your left elbow in the middle of your stomach and your right hand
out to your right side, either flat or on the side where your pinky
is. The right side of your head should be smooshed on the floor as
well. The closer to your head your elbow is, the higher in the air
your legs are. Kick your left leg under your right leg and roll onto
your back. You can also follow with your right leg and make it a nice
backspin. This is also a big part of the windmill. You can also turn
it into a freeze or headspin. Make sure to stretch your wrists a lot
first so you don't screw 'em up.

Boomerang

description: you have your hands in between your legs, which are spread, your hands are holding your body up off the ground, including your legs, while walking on your hands.

[1] Practice holding your body up off of the ground like you would with a flare.

[2] once that your good at that, put your hands in between your legs, in your "area".

[3] Now begin to walk around in a circle by shifting your weight from
hand to hand.

[4] Make sure that your legs are spread wide like you would do in a
windmill.

Once you've got this down, work on your speed, and try linking it to windmills, and if you can do the splits, lean over into a turtle. This is a sweet move, use it wisely.

Boomerang Rise

Take the Boomerang position (arms are straight and between your legs, legs are in the V position and you are balancing only on your hands), then move your legs behind of you and use your muscles to push yourself up in the handstand.

I have so many problems wit that i dont even know where to begin, i applaud the effort but generic move listings never work...one of the reasons the move section on here went buh bye

Dont bite the hand that feeds u, eventually everyone helping u will get annoyed...jesus.

Beginners giving beginners tips without understanding what they are saying is probally one of the worst ways to spread KNOWLEDGE.....which is the key to anything in life.
