Starting Off -
09-03-2007, 08:31 PM
Guess i'll start off by introducing myself.
Sup I'm marco. I've been breaking for about 1 and half years on and off, but thinking about getting into the popping scene. Maybe strobbing and some glides as well, but i just wanted to know if bboys are better at any specific funkstyle because of breaking experiences? Or maybe even things that bboy's aren't so good at? I never had any style as a bboy, so i became a powerhead hoping style would maybe develop with time. And as with starting off i found a couple of guides, but just seems like they're going a bit to fast. Like any beginner, would anyone be able to tell me the basics where to start and exericises to isolate and train the muscles? |

I would start off with waving (arm wave, bodywave,), gliding, other footwork and hitting.

completely different dances.
You're gonna have to get used to going a hell of a lot slower. |

I suggest you learn poppin first if you want to get into the poppin scene lol. Make up your own drills and start drilling. Or just drill those fresnos till your body parts fall off. Synchronize!!!!!

Gliding isn't even popping. And slower I mean in movements.

the first thing i would reccomend before ANYTHING, before popping, anything like that:
learn to GROOOOOOVE homie, learn to groove. a lot of dudes will try n get into popping, but dont even know how to groove with the beat of a song. while you learn to groove, practice grooving on beat, you have no idea how important it is to stay on beat when you're poppin. plus, grooving will teach you to slow down and listen to the music more than think about what you're doing. once you can follow a beat like second nature, then get into the styles of popping. obviously, learning to hit will be a given, so learn to flex all your muscles in unison. personally, since popping is based on the illusion of a dancing robot, i'd learn to robot, and robot CLEANLY. |

lol....please tell me your not serious
its one thing to take a concept and flip it....but to straight bite a style? once you would start "learning your own style", it would be like learnin all over again..... dude, just do what you like....if you think gliding is cool, then glide....if you like poppin, or waving...then do it....and practice the hell outta it....any style is dope to learn....dont let anyone direct you otherwise |

Well actually it depends. When i started out popping, I did funkstyle popping (the old school traditional style where you hit to the funk beats.) Usually dancing to the beat in that way is alot slower in bboying so you don't really have an advantage. But now I do more hip hop dancing where I make some transitions from popping to bboy power moves (i'm not that good of a bboy, mind u).
But I will tell you this: having no style in popping is ALOT more obvious than having no style bboying, because when u bboy you can just look cool doing a ton of power moves...of course you won't get as much respect from bboys without style of course. |
