a good site for contemporary dance is the 5 Rhythms dance site;
http://www.5rhythmsuk.com/5rhythms.html
http://www.5rhythms.co.uk/links.html
There are videos as well. Five Rhythms helps you to get comfortable moving inside your own body, which is, from what I've read on this site, so key to personal expression, and not Biting on some one else. The movement practice teaches you to explore certain rhythms and class participation allows you a space of time to really get in touch with this. Hard to explain, jst like the matrix, it has to be experiencesd and like most things in life, not for everyone, and that's cool. But for folks who want to investigate it more, it's definitely worth your time.
One thing, dont get caught up in the "spirituality" aspect of this thing. A lot of people who practice 5 R are into this vibe, but it's not neccessary.

contemporary/modern is a style that is completely unrelated to street/urban dance styles. it is based heavily off of ballet and modern fills the artistic gaps that ballet cannot achieve in present times due to the differences in style. while both are elegant, there are differences in movement and spacial design that are not used in ballet.

I hear what you're saying. And again, I know this is not the forum to discuss this, but since this is something I have some experience in, I feel comfortable speaking on it. I see modern as being useful in that it gets your body accustomed to movement particularly isolation of different body parts which is useful for popping. Of course you can just do straight up popping itselfLOL you dont "need" to know modern to learn how to pop, but since he asked about contemporary dance I just made a suggestion.

modern requires isolation, but it requires isolation of a completely different sort, and the isolation is not at all robotic. popping is usually either robotic-influenced (i.e. not meant to look natural) or groovy... modern is neither.

it is my belief that you have no idea what you're talking about. you can not like if you want, but for you to say it has no basis just tells of the fact that you do not understand it in the least.

not possible without lessons.

even then, you need at least one or two ballet classes under your belt in order to understand the nature of the dance.

Gotta get formal instruction, which these days are cheap and plentiful. Especially in bigger cities like NYC. If you're interested in contemporary dance, ballet may take a few years!! LOL! Modern might be more accesible, tap, jazz,African has some complex rhythms, and even Native American. But getting personalized insturction is a must if you're serious about this. What might help more, and is offered by the school I go to is basic dance movement and theory. The class sort of tells you'why and how particular movement sequences work.
