You can hit any beat in the music, just be on beat. For example: hit some of the emphasized words in a hip hop song, hit the bassline run on a funk track, hit on the off beats of any track (1
& 2
& 3
& 4
& ), which are often the cymbols in a song. You can even make up you own beat, like adding you own drum pattern to the music (on beat), and hit on that, but if you do that, it's good to keep that beat of hitting for a bit, so the audience can understand and feel the "groove" of your improvised beat.
If you've ever seen Demeye pop, he does all this syncopated hitting, and it's looks really nice (Dementia vs. Demeye vid).
