What should you learn first? -
01-21-2005, 12:59 PM
This question seems to come up a billion times and most of us (including myself) seem to give the basic answers. Learn hits then waves, blah blah you know the rest. Well we say this and then ppl come back and ask "Well i can hit but -insert thoguht here-". So our next response would then be "Work on angles, hitting harder, and sometimes hitting on odd counts to the beat, etc etc. Angles. A lot of people understand what is meant by hitting other angles. But a lot of newbs dont. Furthermore, if the do understand it, most have trouble putting it to practice. They seem to have trouble straying away from Rices tutorial (no offense to Rice or the tutorial, but just saying ppl have trouble exploring...ya know). So along my lil walk down poppin lane i have seen/come up with/ heard of a few ways that can help you as a popper elaborate on your style. To try and help you be diverse. Anyway, on with the "elaboration".
(Btw this is all my opinion. This is no way considered to be the only way shape or form of doing these things. Im just tryin to help)
1st--The first thing that is basic/essential to popping is the fresno. Learn it. If you dont know what it is, look for Rice's tutorial. This will get you to feel the basic hits and very basic angles to popping. And btw when i mean fresno i mean the very basic of hit twice with one arm in front of you and then switch.
2nd--So now that the feeling is good, you have the beat, lets "liven" it up a bit. While you are still fresnoing <--(correct?? i dunno) try to hit different angles. Meaning that your feet are still going to stay on the ground. No walks no steps....just hits with them (legs). Also meaning that your hands should direct you to an area and when the beat comes you stop, and pop. This includes bending over and popping also. Aka a different level. Now alot of ppl do this and tend to stay in front, down, or to the sides with thier arms. Do not forget that you have a whole lotta space above you that you can use too. So use it to its capcity. This will help in being dynamic/diverse. Yay.
3rd--Ok two down. This one is basically like number two except that you lift a leg, put it forward, to the side, w/e but dont set it down. You lift it pop and set it back where it was. Pop a lil more like number 2 and then lift it and put it out to the side. Pop. And then set it back to its place. this will get a lil bit of leg movement out of your dance other than walks, steps, glides, w/e.
4th--combine 1, 2, and 3 and now you can add your steps. Step forward, backward, sideways. Pop when you hit these spots. Steps will also help in the fact that now if you do a step backward you can also shift one are behind you and one infront, thus making and dumpload more angles and making your style deeper.
5th--Add walks into it. Basic. Just move from place to place. Pop.
Tips for angles-- People that have problems with angles. You just dont seem to be able to come up with anymore. Try a few of these...
--Make shapes. Let your hands outline shape (squares, circles, etc) and hit them to the beat. Sounds stupid but if you can execute it right it will add depth. Obviously move to different levels and keep your legs funky at the same time. Dont just do you arms.
--Pretend. Pull off the good old mime. But instead of pushing yourself around, pretend you put one hand on an imaginary table. Pop. Then put the next on it. Pop. Sink down with your legs but keep your hand "on the table". Then touch an invisible wall with a hand while the other is on the table. Pop. I think you catch my drift.
These are just a few basic things that could/hopefully will help you along your way. But dont forget the number one thing to do is what?....Dance. Play with the music. Play with the beat. Keep it funky and add your flava. Aight hope this was of some help to yall. Correct any or all that ya like. Add things, w/e. Hope it helps. Payce.
Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.

i only have one question, what exactly are you doing in a leg hit? Rice's guide was a bit dark, so that part wasn't as easy to see
some people say that can't dance, i tell them to watch MTV. apparently, if you can move your ass without movin your feet, you can dance.

When you leg hit, basically you just tighten your hamstring really fast and then relax it. It should look like your knee is poppin back and forth. (DO NOT ACTUALLY TAKE YOUR KNEE AND SNAP IT BACKWARDS OR U WILL FEEL PAIN!!!!)

What should you learn first???
Hitting.
Without hitting, there is no popping. Too many newbies over look hitting and wanna go for waves and glides...
