Guide: Basic Waving by Danis Kool - 10-09-2004, 11:35 AM

TO ALL BEGGINNERS/NOOBS:
I RECOMMEND LEARNING TO 'POP' BEFORE YOU LEARN TO 'WAVE'!!!!!

There are many styles of waving (I remember seeing a very big list)... this is just a guide for basic waving... Feel free to add comments and point out any corrections

There will be views that i will be reffering to

A) Bird's eye View

................NORTH(N)
.................^........................\ / <= Field of Vision
WEST(W)<-|->EAST(E)...........0 <= Your head
.................v
...............SOUTH(S)

B) FRONT or BACK View

............Up(U)
.............^
LEFT(L)<-|->Right(R)..................__0__
.............v.................................... ..|
............Down(D).........................._^_
___________________ (Ground)

THE BASIC ARM WAVE:

Starting Position:
- You are facing Front North
- Your arms are in a 'T' figure where ur arms... Left arm pointing West n Right arm pointing East, ur palms are pointing to the ground

TIP: U can lower ur arms a bit and slightly bend them (dont have to be FULL straight)... it makes it a easier to wave

REMEMBER: Dont drop ur arms wen u wave!!!!

There are 5 parts of ur arm... Fingers, Knuckles, Hand, Elbow, Shoulder

1) **THIS IS HOW I START MY WAVES... u can skip it if u want** Bend ur 'Hand' UPWARDS
2) BEND ur 'Fingers (Each part one at a time)' so it now points 'DR' (DownRight)... THE FINGERS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
3) BEND ur 'Hand' while u straighten ur fingers... ur Fingers and Hands are straight pointing 'DR' (DownRight)
4) **This is the tricky part... wen in the 'T' starting position u will notice that ur Elbow is pointing downwards floor**
Bend ur 'Elbow', and (at the same time) turn ur arm so ur elbow points 'Up'WHILE keeping ur Palm 'facing the ground'
5) LIFT ur 'Right Shoulder' while u straighten ur entire arm (Pointing Right)

**U can EITHER continue to the OTHER ARM or BODY WAVE**

Transitions From Right arm to Left arm:
You can 'Pop' out your chest before u Lift ur other shoulder

6) LIFT 'Left Shoulder'while u DROP ur 'Right Shoulder'
7) DROP ur 'Left Shoulder' while doin **STEP 4** (but on LEFTSIDE... DER!!!!!)
8) **BACK TO STEP 3** (but on LEFTSIDE... DER AGAIN!!!!!)
9) STRAIGHTEN ur 'Fingers' so its now poiting WEST or LEFT (SAME THING)

REMEMBER: DONT DROP YOUR ARMS WHEN U WAVE... it makes it look very sloppy... keep it elevated

VISUAL EXAMPLE: (Thanks to Morax for making a Waving video) http://media.putfile.com/MoraxWavingTutorial

NOTE: if u dont practice u wont get it!!!!!!! CUS UR BRAIN NEEDS TO GET USE TO DOING IT...

SIMPLE VARITAIONS: Double Arm Wave, Vibrating Arm Waves, Tracing Waves (where u follow the wave with ur hands or fingers), etc... watch videos

THE BASIC BODY WAVE:

there are 3 parts to the body wave CHEST, WAIST and KNEES... some ppl can include the CHIN (X)

1) Stick ur CHEST out... if u cant do that then make ur 'Shoulders'/'Elbow' touch ur back... some ppl ROLL their 'Shoulders' Back or Front
2) Bring back ur CHEST while you stick ur WAIST out
3) Bring back ur WAIST while you stick ur KNEES out and STAND ON your TOES (Doing this will make your body wave look more ISOLATED cus ur height drops when u bend your knees)
4) If u want to body wave back up... do it reverse

Diagram... the 4 straight lines are each segment of ur body
| <= Head or Chin
| <= Chest
| <= WAIST
| <= KNEES

'>' = body part which is sticking out (i used "...." to sepertate each step)

|...........>...........|.............|.............|
|...........|............>............|.............|
|...........|............|.............>............|
|...........|............|............|........... ..>

............^...........^...........^...........^
...... (stepX)..(step1)...(Step2)..(Step3)

NOTE: if u dont practice u wont get it!!!!!!! CUS UR BRAIN NEEDS TO GET USE TO DOING IT... took me about 3 weeks to get it

SIMPLE VARITAIONS: SIDE BODY WAVE (where u stick out each part a bit to the side), Tracing Waves (where u follow the wave with ur hands or fingers)

BASIC LEG ROLLS:

1) Stand with one foot on its toes... u will realise that ur knee will be sticking out *DER*
2) While on its toes basically make a CIRCLE (doesnt really matter how big of a circle you do) with your knees (clockwise or anti-clockwise... wot eva)

WAVING FROM ONE LEG TO ANOTHER:
A lot ppl ask this question so might as well... its just basilly doing a small leg roll (after finishing the 1st leg roll drop ur heels back to the ground) and then doin another leg roll on the other leg

eg... U do the ARM wave into BODY wave (when it get to ur legs) u do a leg roll with ur RIGHT LEG then do a leg roll with ur LEFT LEG... then ur LEFT HEEL hits the floor then u do a BODY wave back up into the other arm

OTHER TECHNIQUES:

WAVING TO THE BEAT:
eg '1st beat' Hit/Pop (if u know how pop/hit ur muscles) ur chest or arms b4 u start the wave and end it with another hit/pop after the wave it finish '2nd beat'...

if u r in between beats and ur still waving eg 'arm wave' to 'body wave'.... do a normal arm wave to ur body and 'hit the chest' *beat1* continue the body wave then come back up to ur chest and 'hit ur chest' again*beat2*, arm wave back to ur fingers then 'hit ur arm' *beat3*

ISOLATION: Isolation in Funk Styles means (its very hard to define in words without using the word 'isolate')... When Moving a certain body part (eg turning ur head in botting/robot) keep the rest of the body parts still ...

The reason we isolate cus ppl focus on the part which is moving... so if ur whole body is moving, ppl wont know wot to focus on... unless u want them to focus on your whole body

Eg in waving... When u arm wave, keep ur body still, so ppl can focus on your arm wave or the part that bends or sticks out

BE CREATIVE & USE YOUR IMAGINATION and create ur own variations!

Thats a really detailed guide. (and really good)

should be pretty good for newbies, but i don't think it will stop them saying "how do i do arm and body waves" even if it gets stickied. Thats just he way thing go.
