Question: what turns normal locking foundation funky? - 08-15-2008, 12:40 PM

hmm.. i'm pondering this question atm.
what turns normal locks and points and rolls into... locking.
i'm not talking about technique wise..
i'm talking about the feeling and character thing... i'm having big trouble with this atm.
currently, i'm doing a drill where i just play songs and do the up ryhthm to it so i can feel the locking feel..
any more hints, tips or drills any of you guys can help me with?

This is one of the hardest parts of locking in my opinion even though I wouldn't say I know too much about locking yet. Techniques, moves, foundations.. they're the easy things to learn. But you can't LEARN a feeling. That's why getting funky is so hard. Again I must say this is only opinion.

well first off i believe getting that funky feeling (groove) is a whole separate entity from character.

to get the groove i believe that comes from two things.
a) as wavedash said...just dance. dance to the music without locking and you'll get into it.
b) learning the social dances of the past before locking i.e. funky chicken, rockstead, etc.

character however i believe is how you portray yourself while dancing. you do things moves a certain way due to your character, but that doesn't mean you are doing it "funky", its just how YOU do your moves. Like "happy" lockers do locking movements in a "happy" way and goofy lockers do their moves in a way to act silly and clownish.

so to summarize, cause i think i even got lost:

groove = how you get down WITH the music
character = how you want your movements to be represented

personally, i think the hardest thing is to develop your own unique character that fits YOU. Lots of people love copying other lockers characters, like h and b, the gogo bros or p lock and j soul, but in the end they aren't representing themselves.

anyway this is just MY interpretation of these things. They aren't necessarily wrong or right

to become funky when you dance, and to enhance your hip movement, you need to be thinking about SEX.

always best to lock when you have a hard-on.

im not sure about locking with a hard on lol could be dangerous when doing a box split hahahahha

but the funk is with the hips and the upper torso. thats what my og teacher keeps druming into us.

I don't think you could just describe funkiness as "hips and the upper torso." That seems to oversimplify it, ALOT. I don't think you could even describe funkiness. You see someone locking, you know it's funky. But what makes it funky? And don't say "hips and the upper torso." That makes it seem too easy, and you shouldn't go there.

come ask me in class man lol

if just doing basic up rhythms isn't working, do the rhythm/punches excercises, or through 1-2 foundation moves in while trying to get the feel. i'll show you what i mean on friday man.

Below is an opinion. I'm not saying you have to believe in it. However, do try it on when you are dancing and see what effect it has...

'Funk' means the same as sex*. Feeling funky means feeling sexual. The word funk is used in many lyrics to mean the same as f*ck.

Watch the dancers of Soul Train in the 1970s. And watch the girl in the orange dress here - (also has The Lockers in it!) See what effect feeling funky/sexual has on her body.

While funkiness is a feeling, its most visible effect on most dancers seems to be what it makes them do with their hips and torso.

If you want to be a funky dancer, you probably need to work on that feeling rather than trying to do the movement/effects of funkiness without that feeling inside.

* at the time when the term got linked to the musical genre, being 'funky' meant having 'sexual odour'.

See more here in the 'Origin of funk' section Funk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I feel that 'being funky' is something attained with time, and an appreciation for the music. As I have listened and learned I have become a better dancer over time. There was no epiphany or benchmark to cross, it just flows with practice. I'll get better as I go, and so will you HKFlame.

Kandyflip:
Funky music is likened to sex, but does that conclude that sex is the foundation for funk? I don't believe so. Do you want really sexy dancing!?

being funky is a particular kind of being sexual. it's not the slow seduction kind (as in the case of the vid you posted).

and whatever some dancers on MTV think, it's not sticking your booty into someone's face kind either. it's not that crude.

it's the feeling of sexual excitement that makes you want to move your hips to the same rhythm of someone having sweet sex. the emphasis is on the feeling inside rather than being sexually graphic.

The thing with locking that poeple dont understand realy is the when a locker does a move he/she waits till the las milisecound then hits the arm/leg what ever on the beat. and then goes back tho a 'neutral state' and then hits the next one. watch flukey or Skooby Doo dance and you'll see it clearly.

On top of that you allwas try to show the first step of a move realy big (or just nail it on the beat, hard to explain with words...) and the last one you hold a little extra.
Give the move a big opening and a grand finale, Lock at the girl in the clip from Watts Stax (0.50) just groovin, claping her hands, then she starts to get down, she's holding the beat then hiting it hard. Holding it hitting it, and THATS what makes it funky! Then fastforward to 2.00 and whatch Greg and Fluky do the Stop&Go Holding it, Hitting it, Holding it, HITTING it.

(all the old funk songs have FUNKY drummers and they DONT keep straight beats, they make it funky, shuffle it up, and play on everything from 1/1 notes down to 1/32 notes even 1/64!)

This makes the move bounce, hop, skip crackle and pop my friend!
One other thing to keep in mind is the groove of the funk dance, not just locking, but rocking bboying AND popping is the upbounce (sumone wrote it before don't know if thats a good description) on all the 1/8 notes. Look at a Rocker/Bboy getting down, a Locker do a skeeter rabbit, and a Popper getting funky. They ALL have it, the bboys show it the most with there arms and shoulders, but it's the same FEEL/GROOVE/MUSIC/FUNK.

the hardest thing to learn once u start to lock is note the LOCKING moves themself but the older steps that MAKES the dance a DANCE, not just moves. You have to have the rocksteady, the breakdown, the funky 4 corners, funky penguin all of them DOWN to understand the feel of locking.

I watched a old clip on Wigs page of the Coin Lockers (think they are from Japan) and they did the sneekapeek, i rewind that clip so many time that my computer ate it (haha bad old VCR joke....) I just COULD'NT get it there was something about it that i didn't get... it took me 2 years before Greg showed me the move correctly (I had manage to fake the step by then but i couldn't dance it yet) and he took one look at me, said: Man u gotta be funky when u do it! Like this!

The head, shoulders, back, hips, knees, legs, feet, arms and hands all moving. I still didn't get it so he broke it down, the basic rocksteady, But add you cheast, shoulders and head, and the movement of the arms and feet. Small subtle moves, but combined the made the WHOLE, the FUNK.

Hope i didn't write too much, and showing is much easier than trying to but it down with words... But i tell u once again the bounce and the groove gotta be there!

Peace
