the answer is no, you don't have to wrist roll - saying that, there's nothing wrong with turning the classic 'up-and-lock' into a 'wrist roll-and-lock' when you're dancing.
with the 'up' position, you hold your hands still for a split second.
the 'up' position is meant to be a greeting in parts of the Afro-American community, according to some members of the Lockers.
you can have your hands flat, with palms facing forwards (in the classic 'hands up!' position), or palms facing each other. Other people prefer to make a circle with each hand (with thumb over the top of their index finger - similar to holding a flagpole) and with palms facing forwards. Another variation I've seen involves bending the fingers and thumbs of each hand back so they look like claws, with palm facing forwards.
so anyway, it's up to you, although it's good to be familiar with all the different 'up' positions.
