Simple question on locking moves - 07-10-2007, 05:04 PM

Hey I just started to lock recently and it's really fun. I have a question though: When doing any motion with your arms & hands, do you always do wrist twirls? For example, when you do the motion where you raise both your hands next to your head do you always have to roll your wrists in the meanwhile? I hope you understand my question >.<

Also, you know how in some instructional videos on youtube, they show you different variations of the lock? When they raise their hands beside their heads and then back down and then lock, do they twirl their wrists at all?

I'm watching a lot of locking videos and hilty and bosch and such but most of them are so fast that I can't clearly see what they're doing...they just look awfully sexy. Thanks if you help me out!

im pretty new to locking too, and if im understanding your question correctly; i dont think its standard that u roll your wrists when doing any other hand motion besides the wrist twirls themselves. but if u can find a way to make it look sexy than go head and do it. and yeah those youtube tutorials are waaay to fast

the answer is no, you don't have to wrist roll - saying that, there's nothing wrong with turning the classic 'up-and-lock' into a 'wrist roll-and-lock' when you're dancing.

with the 'up' position, you hold your hands still for a split second.

the 'up' position is meant to be a greeting in parts of the Afro-American community, according to some members of the Lockers.

you can have your hands flat, with palms facing forwards (in the classic 'hands up!' position), or palms facing each other. Other people prefer to make a circle with each hand (with thumb over the top of their index finger - similar to holding a flagpole) and with palms facing forwards. Another variation I've seen involves bending the fingers and thumbs of each hand back so they look like claws, with palm facing forwards.

so anyway, it's up to you, although it's good to be familiar with all the different 'up' positions.

okay thanks guys.. that helped me a lot. I was just kind of frustrated because the youtube people move their hands so fast that even if they did wrist twirls you couldnt be able to tell so i was trying to do wrist twirls every time i moved my hands lol. Thanks again.
