Although often there is division within the locking community, I don't think as a dance itself locking is very battle orientated. I think showcases suit the dance more than battles, personally...

I've had a good many discussion with a lot of OGs and it is widely accepted by all but a few that battling has little place in true locking. There are some who are ambivalent and/or accept it, but the true nature of locking lies in it being a party dance as opposed to a battle dance.

i think Wavedash is just saying that he does not think locking is a competitive dance, where someone tries to out-dance someone else.
If I'm locking, and I see someone else locking, I'm so happy (and surprised to find!) that someone shares the love of the dance, and I want to dance with them, not against them. I don't want to outsmile them or find another way of outdoing them. The whole battle thing is more a part of b-boy culture, and when locking was accepted and adopted by the hip-hop community, that is probably when some people tried to make locking fit with the dynamics of other dances in the hip-hop scene. But various positions and gestures, such as the 'up' and the point have their roots as friendly greetings within Afro-American culture. And locking, as done by The Campbellock Dancers, was done to express love and brotherhood, and I'm guessing that's how many of us want it to stay. |
