Who knows, of Whackin'!? - 09-13-2006, 02:36 PM

Whackin', who made it, where did it come from, and when, etc.

I've heard it mentioned a few times, and seen a breif demonstration that I forgot. What I'm looking for is more information on the subject.

At the risk of sounding crass, if you don't know anything, do not reply.

from what i understand, whacking/punking came from nyc around the same time as locking if i'm not mistaken. it was essentially, for lack of better words, the gay community's take on locking, though i don't know who exactly invented the dance.

they would have cyphers, where they would wack and/or vogue against one another, only these were called "balls," like dance balls of course.

essntially, i like to think of whacking as elements of jazz dance combined with locking because of the distinct arm actions and styling involved.

it's a really cool style, and says a lot about one's confidence if he/she can pull it off, especially if you're straight, cuz it requires a little flamboyance and it requires one to just not care about what others think.

"ANGEL", an OG from SoCal teaching a class a few months ago at Culture Shock LA H4.

What Blue Steel was saying is essentially correct -- it's a dance not unlike locking but extremely feminine. Shabbadoo, a member of the Original Lockers, was also well known for this style.

Ah, thank you both very much. Now I remember, and furthermore I remember Shabadoo doin' that in Breakin', and furthermore I rember seeing a bit of that on another youtube movie that dissappeared. Whackin' is very femmie. So femmie in fact that I probably will not learn much past one routine.
Do you by chance know any of it's roots, or is it mostly street-jazz junk that came after the influence of locking?

The roots of wacking are gay dance clubs in LA, 1970s. It's not actually from new York, (L got that a little twisted with vogueing, and that's where the "balls" are from.)

Coincidentally, vogueing now has elements of wacking as well as popping, locking, bboying, and prestidigitation, but wacking started on its own in the west coast, when it was called "punkin'!" And that's basically the limit of my knowedge on it! Looks pretty cute, though; I'm a casual fan!

Thanks for the info, Keen.

That would make sense, since punking/wacking OG Ana "Lollipop" Sanchez is West Coast and OGs such as Brian "Footwork" Green and Willie Ninja (RIP) are East Coast.
