Smile Instructional videos to LOCKING - 08-10-2006, 12:47 PM

Hello dancers, poppers and lockers all over the world.

I would like to open new topic. The topic, where we could find, download or order instructionals DVDs to LOCKING.
This topic could be about the best teaching locking material.
At the Slovakia there are not many teachers and is verry dificult to learn the real locking art. I think, this situation could by similar at other countries.
So that is the reason why I would like to open this "topic".

I have found one locking DVD /SKEETER RABBIT LOCKIN VIDEO/ at http://www.mrwiggles.biz/id16.htm
or some good locking is in the film Breakin
you could find hidden locking in Saturday night fever, and all Michael Jackson clips

I Would like to introduce myself just a little bit. I am 20 years old boy from Slovakia (cenral europe) near to Wienn :-). In my soul I am dancer. I have temperament heart and I could not exist without dancing... As any of you of course. Before 2 months I was ill. I was in the hospital and I was not be able to dance for 6 months. I was thinking about my dance life, about my life. I was dealing with bacis question " where we are going, why I am not happy..." and I have recognized that is time to do it now!!!! to dance as much as you could...

I have started to dance when I was 15. I have taken part in social dace lessons. This was my very first step to dancing. But I have relations to the dancing since my childhood. I loved Michael Jackson. His moves are perfect. My parents have bought his DVD. Then I have started to dance. I have tried to learn moonwak. It was very hard for me. At the Slovakia was not any street dance school at this time. So I have take part in one break-dance group. We have rent one gym. I have learned basics of the break dance. But this was not, what I want. I was still looking for the Michael Jackson style. But without sucess, so I started to dance social dances, ballroom dances in sport-competition way. Before one year I have found a teacher of electeric boogie. He is 47 years old man. He is one of the founders b-boy styles in Czecho-Slovakia. He is the smooth legend. Now I am trying to dance the right elecric boogaloo. At this time at Slovakia are 2-3 Dance clases. But all dancers have the same style and all is about $money. 20-30 poppers in front of mirrors. I do not like it. Nobady is teaching technic. I would love to dance the original funk and boogaloo styles. I would like to learn some of the new styles and implement them into old technic. Thank you for your cooperation brothers...I am sure that you have similar feelings.

Love from Floorripper....

it's funny that you mentioned that you were into social and ballroom style dancing before street dancing. Latin dance is the realm that i came from before i started locking, so to me it's cool to see other ballroom peeps try something new and funky.

...Ok, so I am happy that I have found allied soul in this street life.
How long have you been doing this latino dances? Did you original street latino or sport dance? I think that you could have good movement basics. You could implement it in your funky style, most of steps are realy good and look great...
and girls love it... What do you think?

i did dancesport for a year (aka competitive ballroom dancing) competing for my university and did mostly did cha cha and samba, jive, and rumba, but didn't bother learning the smoother dances like waltz or viennese waltz.

in a sense, i try to bring some of the foundations of latin dance into my locking; the fundamental hip movements and footwork of cha and samba really help when i try to get that funkiness in locking.

and quite frankly, now that i've started locking, i don't think i could ever get back into ballroom dance. for one thing it's way too expensive (ain't no way i'm gonna pay 100 bucks again for a one hour private lesson). second, i will never have the physique to become a great latin dancer. i'll always be stocky and short-limbed; unlike the longer-limbed and smaller framed dancers (pro or amateur) who win most of the time. lastly, some of the ppl within the community can be total jerks. mostly i didn't like the idea that my potential to be a good ballroom dancer was limited by my body type.

when i got into funkstyles, on the other hand, and even though i'm just a novice, i've found nothing but nice ppl and was pleasantly surprised to find out that you don't have to be built a certain way (a la ballroom) to be a good funk stylist. and right now, i like where i'm at and i'm more than satisfied with my progress, but i may dabble in some salsa if i need some inspiration.

the only teaching dvd i can think of off the top of my head is the licorice lloyd tutorial which you can order on fantasticpoppers.com. it comes in 2 volumes, but the 1st volume has been discontinued, but the 2nd volume is good nonetheless. however, at just 50 minutes in length, you might be better served dissecting locking vids on youtube.com, especially since you'll see skeeter rabbit's locking tutorial posted there as well, and you'll be able to compare the techniques of many lockers to find a style that suits you.

In addition to the Licorice Lloydd DVD and the two Skeeter Rabbit ones, I would say:

Groovaloos volume 1 and 3 are great fun too. See Groovaloo Kingdom
They break down the leo walk, point, lock, wrist roll, lock (again), whichaway/iron horse, stop and go in incredible detail and really teach the moves well, rather than just demonstrate.

The 'Breakdance Step By Step' DVD featured on this site has a master class taught by Zulu Gremlin which also teaches basic locking. It's also very well taught.

I also have 'Hip-Hop Dance School' DVD where Gemini goes through a lot of the locking moves, including the spinning scootbot which I've not seen taught anywhere else before. Gemini is also a great teacher, and covers a lot of mistakes people make whent they are starting out, and how to correct your technique. Do a Google Search to locate that.

You can also get 'Dance Style Lockers' from www.amazon.co.jp' which is very funky and features Hilty and Bosch, Go-Go Brothers and others. Even though it is in Japanese, I picked up a lot from watching it. Again, they break down the moves very well.

I hope this helps!

we are in the locking forum!

Locking has no real relation to uprock, so I suggest you post in the uprock section, although I don't hold out much hope of you getting more than a badly shot, badly broken down tutorial there!

Bustin' Out is definitely a performance DVD

Amazon.co.jp ships worldwide. If they shipped to me in UK, they will definitely ship to USA. Mind you, it's only been in the last year that they have started shipping worldwide. Look out for a 'Shop in English' weblink on the left column of the home page. Apart from that, you need to:
- Arm yourself with a program that translates from Japanese to English. I use Sherlock on an Apple Mac. There are also websites that work on PCs and Macs that do this with a reasonable level of accuracy. You need text translation for the descriptions of items which, annoyingly, are still in Japanese, even after clicking the 'Shop in English' link.
– Find an online currency converter so you can convert from Yen to your currency. Japanese DVDs cost roughly 3,000 Yen. Don't be freaked out by the 3,000 number!
- Go to Amazon.com and you can see how an Amazon website is organised. What an 'Add to Shopping Cart' icon looks like, the steps you take to process an order etc. The Amazon.co.jp site works exactly the same way, just that it is in Japanese!

Good luck!
