lockers in san diego?? - 07-10-2006, 09:06 PM

are there any? i've taught myself a few basic locking moves, but i'm looking to step up my knowledge of the history and the moves by hopefully getting in touch with lockers in my area, but no luck. i tried calling the culture shock dance studio in my area, but they cancelled their locking classes due to the teacher always traveling, and my college only offers a funk styles class with a severely light emphasis on locking, so i suppose posting here is the only logical option left.

after attending a bboy/funkstyles cypher last weekend, i was shocked to see only 1 other "locker" (but really a bboy pretending to double-time lock), so not to sound entirely desperate, but if anyone can make any reccomendations as to where i can go to learn/network in sd, that would be great.

Come back to Culture Shock on Wednesday at 8:30. "L Lock" from Groov Mekanex has started and is teaching half popping half locking. In fact, one or both of us will probably be at the "house" dance session tonight, which only costs 2 bucks and we can chat about locking.

I was probably that bboy you are referring to you but I don't take it personally, I wasn't looking so good =P

punk.

naw, the guy i was referring to said he was from outta state (east coast if i can recall) and was chatting to me in broken english/tagalog.

so as not to get off on the wrong foot or anything, but it wasn't you

and if you saw me there, i was hella shitty, mostly repetitions of skeeter rabbits and scoobots; i was nervous and scared shitless locking in front of new school bboys who likely don't understand locking at all. as i found out firsthand, locking at a club for fun or in front of the mirror is nothing like locking in front people who can scrutinize your every move; the most notable differences being that i can feel cues in the music better at home, and i'm more willing to execute moves that are newer to me (i.e. backfront clap kneedrops, scoobers, hitch-hike etc.)

but yeah, i'll come and check it out on wednesday.

yes, i'm full filipino, but often get mistaken as hispanic (they say it's cuz of my light skin, i say "yea right")

i don't personally know anyone with the surname estacio, but i'm sure there's a ton in my hometown of mira mesa.

I went to Danceteria on Friday, I assumeed that might have been the cypher you were referring to, and there met a fellow who said he learned locking from Flukey Luke! I didn't really get to see uch of him but he seemed pretty dang sharp!

Well hit me back, anyhoo!

ha, no way! but yeah, i was there on friday.

i met a popper by the name of rubik and he was rollin' with this big dood who was good at boogaloo'in, so i guess that was who you were referring to since i really only saw him dance once.

i didn't stay till the end, left at around 1030, but how did the rest of the night go down?

unless something springs up, i'll be there on wednesday at culture shock and i'll try to come decked out in my knickers if i can find them.

otherwise you can drop by and say what's up or drop off a prescription at sav-on where i work in the pharmacy (but i'm off till friday), just ask for john.

Nah Rubik's not the guy. But a funny coincidence, I came there to meet up with those two that night. I probably rolled in after you met him. We were popping outside when the locker fellow showed up and chatted with us a bit about locking and popping.

Those two aren't primarily into locking but both boogaloo well and rubik's tight with the tuts!

As for the rest of the night.... looked like a lot of bboy circles. cool! they played some james brown and called out rockers, but San Diegans don't seem to brooklyn rock the way I know it, 'cause they don't jerk step or drop, which makes it much less intense!

Well I'll probably come on wednesday too, Rubik will probably be there too. Both those chaps were there tonight and we saw that there was a locking master class today... heh. Missed it.

You didn't come yesterday? We went out afterwards and it was awesome... Jr Boogaloo rolled out to a bar with us and he and L and some random guy started WACKING!

I love this city!
