Wave's comment about connecting the uplock with the lock is pretty accurate, particularly for old-school locking. A lot of lockers use that combination to fire off other combos or to prep for a power move.
My personal advice would be to understand the timing of locking. For example, you should be setting off your locks on the even beats, but using a less-emphasized/prepping move on the odds (hence the up-to-lock combo). Also understand single-time vs double-time - a lot of lockers think that because they're locking fast and they're double-timing. The reality is that they're probably playing a song with a fast tempo. Double-time is a LOT faster than what people believe. Hell, it's my timing of choice even I can't do it right 90% of the time.
