Which-a-way - any tips? -
12-18-2005, 05:31 PM
Hi, I hope you can help.
Am trying to learn how to do the which-a-way correctly. ok, i figure there is lots of other details such as how you lean your body and where your hands are, but first of all, i'd like to ask people who have been locking for a while whether this is the right leg action: Starting position: Feet apart on the ground. 1) Keeping the knee where it is while bending the knee, lift heel sideways so the heel diagonally faces the ground on your side 2) Move the knee up and sideways so it is directly above the foot 3) Move foot inwards so it is where your knee would be if you were just standing straight 4) Put foot down to starting position. (then do the same with the other leg) If you have any tips on how to do the which-a-way well, please let me know. Would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

Theres a DVD by the fantastic poppers called Lock it up Lloyd that demonstrates that move. get it here: http://www.fantasticpoppers.com/videos.htm
I would also suggest stretching the muscles involved in that move so that you are loose! particularly the hips. Stand with your feet a little wider than shoulder width. Your toes and knees should be pointing out to the sides NOT twds the front(kinda like the kung fu horse stance) now slowly squat down as far as you can and hold that position. this will stretch out the mucles that will make you nice and loose to do the move right. You can hold on to a wall or a chair to balance yourself. |

I found the best source in P2P's is definetly SOULSEEK, then EMULE.
You can grab heaps of clips off soulseek, including Gemini's. |

KEEP YOUR UPPER BODY COMPLETELY STILL
One of the worst things when watching someone do a which a way is that their upper body moves around too much ill try and post the clip of flukeys which a ways from the SNL performance i have it on my computer somewhere but its only the legs that should move upper body stays still |

thanks for the tips everyone. they've been really helpful. just need to practice and practice and work on increasing my flexibility. stretching before definitely helped.
i've just seen a clip of flukey luke's which-a-ways in slow-mo - how he gets his leg so high up and then twists it is insane! looks fantastic watching Skeeter Rabbit was interesting. is it good form to rocking left and right like he does? when people say, keep your upper body still, does that include not rocking to the side? |

that video was tight, but remember there is no "one-way" to do any given move in locking. I use at least 3 different versions of this move to keep things fresh.
for instance swooping the leg up straight, toes out/kneel in, then bending leg so my knee is pretty much touching my shoulder, kicking foot back out before swooping straightened leg back down, smoothly switch to other side and repeat. great move to play air-guitar with! |

Hold a chair. That way your upper body won't move. Haha.

The massive leg rotation that the Go-Gos do is NOT a mandatory part of the whichaway but rather a newer variation.
Head into the Old School Videos thread and check Fluky's solo on the SNL show! |
