Slipping into double-time -
12-14-2005, 12:45 PM
Anyone else have this problem....?
You're locking to whatever funky music you have (single-time) but keep slipping into double time because you're feeling the music too bad. People are always saying to work on single time and get that down before advancing... The problem is a) I get tired real quick going double time (damn I'm un-fit...) and b) I start to get off beat. It's usually after a double lock.... like up, lock, pace, pace, up, lock, point, point, up, lock-lock, point-point, up-lock, lowlock-point... and slip into double time from there. Maybe it's just me?! |

I usually weave between timing. If I try to consistently double-time, what ends up happening is that I'm moving so fast that I recycle moves and combos. If I stick to single-timing, I'll be largely confined to riding the constant beat vs. a particular instrument.
A trick to convert double-timing into single-timing, aside from altering your pace, is to use/create intermediate moves. For example, instead of just breaking out a lock, prep for it. The OG way to prep for a lock is to have your arms straight and flush with the sides of your body with hands in a loose fist, and THEN you pull up. This will give you the two counts that you need, since locks are traditionally done on the "even" beats in a bar. Prepping doesn't directly address the timing issue, but merely "trick" you into concentrating more on your final move (which turns a move into series of moves) than your individual moves. |

Thanks both of you for those honest answers.
In answer to your question: Are you sure you know what you're doing with double-time? Well, yes and no. when I say I slip into it, I mean my whole mindset becomes 1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and but it doesn't work... I can't keep up, that's the key problem. wavedash, your drill-idea is good, I'll definately use this. And some great tips on following the beat too - thanks a lot. NightWindDriftr, thanks for the trick there. I think what you're saying is to add an intermediate which effectively works on the 'ands'. The example you use with the lock is one I use without knowing which is good anyway. As I say, I'm relatively new to this dance (and well to dancing in general really) so these tips are real welcome. I'm real close to London... it'd be awesome to hook up with someone who has proper knowledge. atm, I'm working from advice from here, video clips and a HIP HOP teacher's kinda flawed instruction to basic (choreo) locking. Just checked up some short clips of Flexy Stu's locking and it looked pretty crisp. Do you know if he teaches a class or wouldn't mind hooking up with someone so new to the whole thing? Thanks a lot, Jon |
