Poppers saying locking is 'gay'/'camp' (???) - 12-04-2005, 02:44 PM

I don't know if anyone else has come across this......

Occasionally I've seen poppers in clubs doing their thing when I've been going out. Anyway, on two separate occasions when I've asked different poppers whether they ever got into locking, they've said that while they liked popping, they didn't get into locking because they found the style 'gay'. They also didn't know it as locking, called it 'LA style dancing' and knew of it from watching 'Breakin'', the movie from the 1980s.

I don't think they meant it in a homophobic way, more that they found the wrist rolls, points and facial expressions quite camp in style, and didn't think that was for them.

Just wanted to know what other people thought of this (mis?)interpretation of locking in comparison to popping.

Tell em that without locking, there would be no popping, therefore, if locking is gay, popping is also gay.

I may be too tall to wave like most others...

once you pop, you cant stop.

I dance to impress...I love dancing at parties.

You'd be hard-pressed to find lockers who lock like Shabba Doo and Boogaloo Shrimp these days. (Modern) Locking is very much different than what it used to be.

why did u include all poppers?

i never said locking was gay.

u shouldve rephrased it to

"ignorant un-educated poppers in training said locking is blah blah blah"

id slap those fools who said locking was gay.

Good job, Rice, lol.

What kind of poppers have you been talking to, Electrolux? Those kids must be one of them people who look up to Omarion and stuff.

actually, I wasn't seeking to imply all poppers. definitely, definitely not. just to clarify, I don't think the views about locking I mentioned are held by most poppers.

I actually had no idea what locking was (I was part of the majority who used to think popping n' locking were the same thing). But like Danis, as soon as I saw it live I got hooked there n' then - it kicked my interest in popping way out the water.

I gotta say though, there are some dude lockers out there who put a lil too much campness in their style. It's usually a French dude too, for some odd reason...

Pshh, who knows, I'm not familiar with the names of most lockers. *But* the people who got me into locking were Hilty n' Bosch (from Japan I think) - they make locking look so damn cool n' yet funk-infused, and definitely not camp.

Yes, I agree with you. But, on my opinion the old school locking was nicer. As concerning me. I think that locking from breakin was more in dance way. It was more funky. I could see at the ozone and turbo locking foundations of jazz and classic dances. Their moves was so smooth, nice, pretty. No so raw. Some new lockers are so raw and looks like freaky monkies or clowns.
Have you ever seen film Saturday night fever? John Travolta has maked a good job. His dance is from 70's funk and locking. He looks like the real dancer. Like Ozone and Turbo.
I think that because of this reason of "dancer shape" the poppers said about gay dancing. Some poppers are called dancers, but they are not able to dance to any kind of music. Gay? maby from jelaous....The Real dancer moves looks so natural, smooth and dancily.

i think some poppers diss locking b/c personally to me its a harder dance to learn but when it is done right it is hella dope.....but another reason may be that they have never really seen anyone do it the right way so they dont kno what it really looks like and wtf is dancily

Im a popper and i love locking. Locking is not gay =/ infact, my friend combines both styles ( i bet a lot of people does, hence popping and locking correct my term if im wrong ) and it looks sweet.
