Locking to funk -
08-24-2005, 02:28 PM
Isn't locking traditionally danced to funk music (such as James Brown)? Then it makes sense that it's referred to as a funk dance style. Popping fits into the funk term as well because it's, from what I know, traditionally danced to electro-funk (such as D Train or Zapp & Rogers). I do agree, however, that they are totally different dance styles. As for the music, I find funk and electro-funk to also be quite different, but with some strong similarities.

I remember watching Breakin' and I was hooked with Ozone's style. at least I think that's who he was on the movie, or was it Turbo, pretty sure it was Ozone. his locking was dope as fck and I started trying to pick it up on my own through clips on the internet because I couldn't find lockers where I was from (WA) unless I went to breaking battles.
even though there were no lockers I knew of I picked it up quicker because I actually tried battling with it. and what style is better for a newb locker to battle than a popper. those were some embarassing high school days. |

havent been on here since the summer
but i thought id post for the person asking how to get started before all else learn the LOCK you can do points, twirls, etc all you want but if you dont put in that lock you are not locking all the other moves were secondary to the lock the lock is what came first....the seed that don created i know theres a clip floating around the net you can find of suga pop demonstrating the lock try and get ahold of that (maybe on soulseek) there is a yahoo group forum you can look into joining just post your email in the mr wiggles locking forum and you can get an invite any other questions feel free to ask good lock ~Scramblelock |

U DAMN RIGHT USE KNEE PADS LOL! but if u do it propa, u dont really need knee pads! Learn it by watchin the way gemini does the real high knee drops, sorta softens the blow to the knees by his legs hitting softly first...dunno hard to explain without a clip...check the clip out but in slow motion, ne clip...infact ask Wavedash or The Scramble Man. Peace.

And yes i totally agree, Locking should be danced to Funk music, Funk, Soul, as the dance is Funky and Soulfull, well if u do it properly! I've been told by The Lamaroc, that he likes my locking style and he said "Your soul definately comes out when u dance b!" Big up LAMA and the whole Fresh Sox Crew and my boys the Hot Steppers and Pokedots. Peace

Hi everyone. I Have first seen locking in the Movie Sturday night fever and later at in breakin'. Ozone was awesome, great. So I think that old school style is the best, because the new is too funny. It seems to be comic for me. I like cool lockin style. Love from Floorripper - Slovakia
